Interesting startup problem, irritating

Hi.

On Windows 8 since the upgrade from 7 and continuing after the recent Patch Tuesday.

I have a situation after I log into Windows 8.

After the Metro window arrives and a short while, I get a message "how would you like to open this file something like C:/programe.txt . So I choose Notebook, I then get Notebook started with No file found would you like to create a new file, I tried both yes and no and nothing appears, after which I close notebook and I have no more problems until I reboot.

I suspect an application but would like to isolate which one it is.

Hi,

See if it happens in safe mode. If not, use clean boot troubleshooting. In addition to 3rd party programs and services disable the scheduled tasks in the root of the task scheduler library.

If you still can't figure it out:

1. Post the screenshot of the message you're getting.
2. Get Process Monitor and create the boot log (upload to SkyDrive, Dropbox, etc).
3. Start Autoruns as Administrator and Ctrl+S the data file and upload it as well.

Query. What is notebook? Is that a third party program?

Hi Thanks for the ideas.

1st. I meant Notepad Sorry.
2nd I did as advised and disabled everything.

I thought it was going to work without the 'what program do you want to open this file with?'

I went into my WL-mail, nothing it opened ok
I went onto the web and up it popped.
So I thought I will take a snip of the message for you to see and the message disappeared.

So given we have stopped all the start-up programs and it was fairly quick but then the message came and went, I wonder if it just my impatience as I don't think I have ever just left it there.
