Odd Windows Media Center DVD Behavior?

so i use dual displays, one is 1920x1080, the other 2560x1440 (which is my primary display), and they are configured as extended. for whatever reason dvds won't play in wmc if i open/launch wmc in my 2560x1440 display, but they play perfectly well if i open/launch wmc i my 1920x1080 display.moreover, if i have a dvd playing in the 1920x1080 display and try to drag it to the 2560x1440 display, the wmc screen goes blank when it is fully in the 2560x1440 display - if half of the wmc player is in the 1920x1080 display, and the other half in the 2560x1440 display, the dvd continues to play fine (photo below). what the heck? add to this wmc live tv plays perfectly well in both displays, regardless of where i launch wmc, and even if i drag wmc back and forth from one display to another. my dvd/cd-rom drivers are up to date and i have the latest, complete codec package installed. my video card drivers are also current. any thoughts?

something else i just noticed - if i'm playing a dvd in wmc on the 1920x1080 display and i full screen it, my mouse is trapped in the 1920x1080 display, i can no longer move it back and forth to each display. so if i want to use both displays, i can't fullscreen dvd playback. again, what the heck?

I think the reason why they want to play in the 1920x1080 display is because that it the native resolution for any HDTV.

the higher resolution 2560x1440 may not work at all, for Media Playback I mean. I never set my displays larger than 1920x1080, regardless of if I can or not, because there really is no need to have a resolution that large, for me at least.

have you tried VideoLAN? It may allow you to play the media on the larger screen. If you are using MC to play the media, it may be wanting to switch the resolution to the lower resolution. Maybe you can tell it to do that in it's settings, I have not had to do it.

I think your 2560x1440 may be too high. But before you change it, download VLC and see if it plays on your main screen.

Even if you do not want to use VLC, loading the DVD into it will tell you if you have any problems with your display. I think you ought to change both displays to 1080, there are no movies that have any larger resolutions, even if it will play in the larger res, it will be Windowed, and in Full Screen mode, it may fall short of the edges of your screen.

OK - I just checked both of my systems which are attached to a 40" Hitachi HDTV. I have nVidia cards in both, and I can't get any resolution higher than 1080p, they both have 512 Ram, one of them is connected via the R G B cables, the other through HDMI.

So it sounds like your Large Display can run the larger resolution. Is this some new standard? It may be that the rest of your system cannot go above the 1080. I'm going to do some research on this and I'll be back.

Does your large display use Dual-Link?

This just appears to be the shortcomings of a new technology trying to adapt to the properties of the old tech.

I would suggest dropping your resolution to 1080 just for watching movies - Will the DVDs play on the main display when you drop down to 1080? I'm still reading.

The DVD playback SHOULD be upscaled to fill the screen at your resolution. But the problem may be Media Center, which may be locked in to 1080p/i.

Try VLC Media Player, see if it shows your movies on the large screen. If it works, then this means Media Center cannot play at the higher resolution.
