Hey Guys,

I had an issue with my external western digital passport. I got a replacement sent to me, and last night, I left my computer on, transferring data from one external to the other. In the morning, I saw went into My Computer, and right clicked on the hard drive and clicked on properties to see if the file sizes were the same. I was greeted with the message, -Desktop- The properties for this item are not available. THE PROBLEM IS NOT JUST WITH MY EXTERNAL DRIVES THAT ARE PLUGGED IN, ITS ALSO HAPPENING WITH MY C DRIVE, DVD DRIVE, BASICALLY EVERYTHING IN MY COMPUTER, WHEN I GO INTO DRIVE C, AND RIGHT CLICK A FILE GO TO PROPERTIES, THE PROPERTIES COME UP

Then, I did some googling, and tried some registry fix, that seemed to have worked for two other people,

Solved The properties for this item are not available - Windows 7 Help Forums

but when trying to add the .reg file, i got the message

registryerror.jpg

ERROR ACCESSING THE REGISTRY

So I thought to myself, I didn't have this problem yesterday, and I checked system restore, and I saw that I had a restore point created yesterday, after windows updated. But, I have this problem...

I was able to do the system restore after all. But, it did not fix my problem.

If anyone knows how to fix this, it would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to have to reformat my hard drive.

Thanks in advance!

Does the system work without the properties for drive C coming up? It may just be the way your drives are configured, how many partitions do you have on that drive?

Also, are you running BOOT CAMP on a Mac? You may not ever be able to see the properties for the drive. But I'm pleased to see Boot Camp Running Windows 8.

Also, when you unplug the passport, does everything go back to normal? Try that.

Yes, the system does work without the properties of C coming up. I've got 4 partitions, I've got a triple boot, windows 8/mountain lion/ubuntu. No, I'm on a PC. And the passport is disconnected from the computer. I've tried restarting, cleaning registry, system restore. Still same issue. This is the first time this has came up by the way, I've had this triple boot configuration for about 2 months now. This just happened after last night, when I was transferring data from one external hard drive to the other.

It may be due to you having so many partitions on one drive but it usually shows you the size of the drive. this is unusual I'm going to have to look around for this and see if I can find something similar.

And when you plug the passport drive and does it show you the properties of that?

One thing you can do with Windows 8 if you have an install disk and I'm pretty sure you you should have one but even if you don't it may work...

Open a command prompt and type SFC /SCANNOW

This will locate any corrupt system files and replace them. it should make a log in events somewhere

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
I am having the exact same issue. I also tried adding those registry settings, restarted. I tried cc cleaner, glary utilities, got all updates and nothing... its so annoying.

I am running Windows 7 on this particular machine though.

It is most likely due to that you have a Apple Computer running the other two OS's is the problem. Try looking at the WD drive in the Mac OS partition.

As for drive sizes, you just have to open the Explorer window and it will show the space available on all mounted drives. When you do what you have done. It makes things even harder. Especially if you are writing to the WD with Mac OS & Linux.

My guess on the Registry issue, is the tool that you used to install Windows, that is causing the file locking issue.

I do not have an apple computer, it also never did this up until about a week ago
