Media Center Install Problems

don't know if anyone can help but about a month ago I wanted to install media center on my windows 8, so went to add new features, paid for a license key, the payment went through fine, accepted the terms then get the error message "something went wrong, close the wizard and try again later"

I kept retrying the install over the next few days with the same error. I did not have a lot of time to troubleshoot the problem and just wanted a refund for the product I never received which Microsoft did after phoning them and agreeing to a electronic destruction letter.

Forward to today I would like to try installing media center again but when I go to the "add new features" section the first window that comes up is this

and I want to get back to this

So how do I reset this add new features section without having the hassle of reinstalling windows?

appreciate any help.

Well, did you click on "Choose" when you do that it should ask you for license number or windows product code.

I think the problem is that the OP is not getting the choose screen now. He's just getting what's shown in the fist picture and when he clicks "add features" it fails.

@ livewire, have you tried system restore to a time before you tried to installed MC? If your restore points don't go back far enough you may have to do a reset or refresh.

Thanks for your help guys, that is exactly it. When I go to add features I get the top image.

I've done quite a bit within the month so did not want to try restore, reset or refresh. I suppose I will try and find an alternative media center. Not a great start from moving from a mac.

Why does Microsoft not let you just download Media Center from the store and enter the purchased key within the app instead of having the order system baked in the os.

To be frank, you do not need WMC at all, There are so many great programs that do same or more. I use Pot Player for everything multimedia, it's free and comes with all the codecs necessary to play anything, VLC is another great MM player. With all that stuff around I don't even know why M$ even bothered with WMC.

You can just enter the key in add features window and skip the ordering it part. Anybody that snagged one of the free keys while they were available would do it that way. I think its an OS upgrade so that's why you add it though add features, its a feature added to Windows 8. Its the same as going from 8 to 8 Pro, you're enabling extra features that are currently disabled. That's my best guess anyway. You appear to be stuck in a loop. Your MC upgrade started but didn't finish. Now when you go to add features it wants to finish the upgrade but fails when you do. If it was me I'd likely do a clean install. At the very least I'd try a refresh or reset.

There are some people like me, that like it. Mind you I wouldn't pay to add it, but I did snag some of the free keys that Microsoft offered up, so I use it.
