I know i have posted this before but i really dunno what to do!!

I have a Acer 5750g Laptop with i5 core processor and 8gb of Ram

It came with Windows 7 installed and when Windows 8 came out i
installed this. I have freezes random without warning. This can
be once or even twice a day or even happens after 3 days
at a time. So sometimes it goes a long time without a freeze.use

All of my drivers are up to date and i am sure its not
a hardware fault. I use Tune Up Utilities, CC Cleaner
and Mcafee and all system should be fine and it
is not these programs causing a freeze as i got one
before installing these!!!

When i get a freeze all i can do is to turn off and reboot!!
If i had been doing some work then this gets lost!

I have tried installing Win 8 on a fresh clean install and tried
also upgrade from Win 7 but no matter have freezes on both
installs

Please please help as this is driving me nuts!
I have had no freezes on Win xp or Win 7 or Linux
on this pc, So something within Win 8 must be causing this

Thank You

Hi there
Why on earth are you using things like "McAweful", CC Cleaner and a load of that other garbage on W8. W8 has a perfectly DECENT built in AV system - you don't NEED any of that other junk.

I'll bet if you install W8 CLEANLY (or if it came pre-installed with a load of cr@ap- ad- and trial-ware - uninstall it all) W8 should work just fine. Install the UPDATES too. Don't use the drivers from W7 unless there really is no other choice.

You don't need a load of that other stuff -- and it usually severely decreases performance and in extreme cases like yours renders the OS unuseable.

Also where did you get your W8 system from -- if it was from a Torrent site then all bets are off. If you have a LEGAL key download a new copy - it's possible your W8 system install media is corrupted.

Before reverting back try removing all that garbage and seeing what happens. An Acer with an i5 even without an SSD fitted is a decent machine by any standards.

Cheers

Hi there
@Brummyfan --Thanks anyway

Looking forward to English Premier League -- Jose Mourinho back -- that's always interesting - makes up for loss of Alex Ferguson.

Can't imagine New boys Hull City surviving although they have a great new Stadium - but Chelsea will just blow them away I suspect. In the Summer I get withdrawl symptons -- you don't have to be English or live in the UK to follow a team or to be interested in the Premiership -- like most non UK residents I support Man Utd - but can't really see them doing well under the new manager -- I'm probably in a minority of 1 on that though.

Cheers

I would agree on that "other crap " but Defender is just not the greatest AV out there and does not work any faster or takes much less resources than a Full blown AV like Avast, it's much less frequently updated (Avast does it sometimes even 5 times a day) but better than nothing I guess. The need for "protection" is directly proportional to internet surfing habits and what is going thru the system, how many strange memory devices you connect to it etc. It's also good to know how sensitive stuff you got on the computer and get appropriate protection according to that.

If you're going to take a third party AV program over Defender, it's certainly shouldn't be Avast, AVG, or McAfee. Avast is a resource hog. Anyone that says otherwise is delusional. AVG left so many holes on my school campus, it wasn't even funny. We had a rampant spread of one of the viruses and a lot of those people had AVG.

Just because of that "Avast is a hog" fame I did some testing with Avast free. Copied some 4GB .iso files from one physical disk to another another while doing a full scan and it did slow down the transfer by about 9% compared to with it stopped. With about 12% of memory used. Processor usage was a bit higher, up to about 25%, but that was on a dual core processor, now when I tried on a 4 core it was still the same but only on 2 cores, it looks like it is not optimized for more than 2. So on my system, it's impact is not discernible by naked eye in real time. AVG and Bitdeffender free were at about same mark. Did not checkout Deffender Because I had to clean so many computers using it as a sole AV that it isn't even funny any more.
I don't think that any industrial strength AV could keep schools safe, maybe even NSA security system could not do that. It's probably the most hostile environment you could find. I do keep another security layer for USB memory sticks because it's automatic scan of any usb memory connected and faster than Avast in that field. That's a free program called MCShield and it works like a charm. My main computer sees quite a bit of data going thru it that security is my main concern, much higher than speed.

I got these freezes way before i installed Mcafee , Cc Cleaner etc so it's not them causing the freezes. I downloaded Windows 8 Pro on the day it came out from Microsoft and did a fresh install. I believe you should buy a av as they always telling you to get one over a free one but i got Mcafee because my computer came with it with Win 7 and worked well. As for Cc Cleaner i always tell people to get this as it helped stopped a dreadful Scam program from loading and disabling your windows programs from running that then scans your computer for viruses but this is a fake company trying to get your money. Also for a small program Cc cleaner does quite a lot and not just one thing. I probably don't need all lof these things but i guess for peace of mind i suppose. Thank You for your help Webtax will try what you suggested also :D

How often does it Freeze? Randomly, or does it seem to freeze at a certain time overnight?

My Windows 8 "Social PC" (the one I use for blabbing and browsing) has been doing this for almost a month and a half now - Finally I told Metro to stop updating my Metro apps automatically. What happens is BITS starts sometime around Midnight, and when it is finished, it freezes when the Service shuts down. It has been driving me crazy!

Oh Yah, - Mcafee is about the worst AV Program ever, it does not identify any viable threats, but it does delete things like Unlocker, uTorrent, etc. Use ESET NOD32 instead, you can buy Subscriptions for various amounts of time I think. It finds stuff that you would not think are viruses. Also, you should try TDSSkiller and Malwarebytes AntiRootkit - Both are free and can find all manner of Rootkits. A Rootkit may be causing your problems. and ya never know where you pick them up, they worm their way in from various so called "good" programs. cCleaner is a great Program, but it will never cause a system to Lock up.

If you have installed anything like iLivid that could be a problem too, also various "toolbars" - And there is a thing called "MyWebSearch" which is very malicious.

What you need to do is the next time it stalls, reboot and then open Event Viewer and look under "System" and see that was gong on right before the lockup. When I did it, it showed me BITS was the culprit. It is still locking up. but not as much.
