Privacy search engine ixquick and startpage

Startpage, and its sister search engine Ixquick, are the only third-party certified search engines in the world that do not record your IP address or track your searches.

Those searches reveal a shocking amount of personal information about you, such as your interests, family circumstances, political leanings, medical conditions, and more. This information is modern-day gold for marketers, governments, black-hat hackers and criminals - all of whom would love to get their hands on your private search data.

thanks for sharing. Just took it for a spin. Would like to customize the results page for something more aesthetically appealing.

I don't know how to customize the look of it. The main purpose is privacy.

Recent revelations show the US government is spying on it's citizens through a project called "PRISM". Does PRISM impact my Privacy using StartPage?

No, it doesn’t. It only involves snooping through US based companies like Apple, Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Facebook, YouTube, AOL and Skype. StartPage is based in the Netherlands and is therefore not subject to US jurisdiction. Due to our non-retention policy we have never been asked or ordered to hand over any personal data. We simply don’t have any.

On the Settings page (tap on the gear icon in the right-hand corner of the green footer bar), you can make the text of the results larger or smaller, and you can display 10, 20 or 50 results per page.

I know what you mean. One of the main things that lets StartPage down is it's aesthetics. DuckDuckGo (which is another privacy search engine) has a nice interface, which you can customise further in 'settings', then create a shortcut with the URL parameters in it. Here's an example of it set up to be quite minimalist:

It would be interesting to see DuckDuckGo and StartPage merge and combine the best bits from both of them.

If these were more widely known, they should pick up more users.

It is staggering how few people understand what the big players are doing to them. Google, Bing, Yahoo - no thanks.
