I just ordered a laptop (MSI). All the listings I find for it say "Win 8" is the loaded OS. What is your guess, Win 8 Pro or something else. I guess I'll know for sure in a couple of days. I have a feeling I will be changing it.

Hello Robert,

Most likely it will be the core "Windows 8" installed. Otherwise it would have Pro included in the name since it's a more premium edition and they would want to advertise that.

Kinky

From what I have read, I am wondering if it will be a problem to "upgrade" it to Pro or Enterprise.

As a home user, you cannot buy a license fir enterprise. You can buy the pro pack to upgrade it to the pro version though.

In that case, you could either do an upgrade install to the Pro and keep what you have, or a clean install to start fresh with either one.

You wouldn't be able to directly upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8 Enterprise since you cannot upgrade from a retail license (W8 or Pro) to a volume license (Enterprise).

If I Understand

Sounds like I take my "Pro disk" and do a upgrade install. Is that true?

Yes, you could do that or a clean install. It's basically just whichever way you prefer. :)

This An MSI Laptop

It has to 64G ssd's in a raid 0 config. If I do a clean install, will I lose the raid config?

No, but you most likely will need to use "Load driver" with your RAID drivers during the first part of installation for it to be able to see your RAID config for you to select to install to.

Driver Location?

Is the raid drivers located on the win disk? What is the name of the raid driver file?

The procedure will be like this below, but for your RAID drivers instead. Your RAID drivers will depend on what brand and model number your RAID controller is.

If it's Intel, then you can get the driver at the link below. Be sure to download the correct f6flpy-x86.zip (32-bit) or f6flpy-x64.zip (64-bit) as the Windows 8 you are installing.

I'd wait until you find out the exact brand and model number of the RAID controller that the MSI laptop uses.

Looking this bad boy over. MS's Junk evaluator list it at a 7.0. That is because of Graphics. Everything else is 7.8. To evaluate it must be plugged in to the charger. (Hmnn)
The aforementioned driver link is the correct one. It is also the same ver already installed. ver -- 11.6.0.1030

Got to make a decision now. Do I upgrade Win8 and wait for Win8.1. Or do I just wipe it and install Win7?

If you were wanting to go with Windows 8 eventually, then I suppose you could go ahead and install it if you like, and just update it with 8.1 when it's available. You will still be able to customize Windows 8 to your liking until 8.1 is released.

I'd say go with what you like though. :)
