video and audio distortion

I'm having difficulty playing some movies on windows media player and vlc player. Some shows will work and some will be very distorted. The picture and sound is extremely distorted as you can see in the picture. I didn't have a problem with this before but now I keep getting this? Someone told me that it was something to do with the codec but getting DivX or k-lite (think that's the name) has made zero difference. Can someone please help me as i'm at my wits end.

giving the source of the video[dvd rips] are you sure that they work, did you try them on another computer
