Solved How to delete 'Item Not Found'

I am having problems deleting a folder. I'm getting the message 'Could not find this item'. The error message gives the location as C:\Users\.......\My Music

(I had a similar problem (but different location) before in Windows 7 and was able to delete it going to the 'Run' window, entering 'cmd', which brings up the 'Command Prompt' window).

I'm attempting to follow this procedure in Windows 8.

But in the command window after C:\Users|.....> when I try to change to that folder using the command 'cd My Music' I get the reply 'path not found'.

Does anyone have any suggestions.

Thanks

Hello Ben, and welcome to Eight Forums.

In the command prompt, you would not include the "My" part. The path would be "C:\Users\(user-name)\Music" or the command "cd music" instead.
See if refreshing (F5) the window may help to clear it if it's just a ghost folder.

If not, then see if restarting the PC may.

If still not, then see if the free program Unlocker may be able to delete it.

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

Try in the command prompt:
Code:
rd \\?\C:\Users\<path to the folder here>

If it doesn't work, use:
Code:
shutdown /r /o /t 0
to enter the command prompt in the Recovery Environment. Type notepad, then Ctrl+O, navigate to the folder, right-click, delete.

Ok, Shawn got here first, so you got to try his suggestion first :)

Nice tutorial on deleting from RE, but I usually advise a visual method with Notepad to figure out drive letters, as it's easier regardless of the user skill ;) Then one can delete from cmd or GUI.

OK Thanks for all the feed back.

I did take the 'My' off and was able to 'see' the Music' director where the undeleteable (sp?) file resides. Then tried the 'del' command to no avail. Turn the machine off and back on. Didn't work. I'll work through the other suggestions and get back if I have more questions.

Thanks again

Ain't Unlocker Great? Malwarebytes has a proggy called "File Assassin" which is similar, you can use that to terminate the process generated by the file. That's usually why they can't be deleted, cos they are running somehow.
