I see various articles saying many different things but can someone direct me to the "horses mouth" where officials from MicroSoft confirm that the option to default boot direct to the desktop is in fact a reality in Windows 8.1?

Thanks!

I congratulate all the people who couldn't live without booting straight to the desktop.

That said, I'm indifferent about this news. I'm happy whether it boots to the metro or desktop. Doesn't really bother me which way. Then of course, I've never been OCD about anything.

Apparently so.

Not clear to me why it is a big deal - it saves the annoyance of seeing the start screen at boot up.

More curious is the alleged return of a start button - apparently that leads to - Metro

Let me see if I have this straight :

Metro adorers do not want a start button, some positively hate the idea.

Metro avoiders do not want a start button that leads to Metro.

There's a winner.

Maybe it is supposed to help enterprises.

It's one less click, and a few seconds saved booting to the interface we want to use. I have no interest in a touch UI for my PC.

Like many other users feel, why should I be forced to manually click past metro to get where I want to go and was seconds watching the metro start screen switch to the desktop? I never had to deal with that in previous versions of Windows, and don't want to bother with it now.

I'm relieved, not to mention that when you do boot directly into the desktop you get the good old start button (and menu) just like in previous versions. Problems solved.

All I have heard is that the start button will bring you to the start screen NOT the start menu.

Boot to desktop - sure it removes an annoyance.

No start menu - the button takes you to into Metro smileys-devil-937424.gif . The very thing you have been trying to avoid.

Wrong. Those of us who like 8 don't care if the start button is there or not. If it comes back then Ok. If not then Ok.

Wait a minute...lets clarify this better.

You are saying that even with the default boot direct to the desktop UI even if you use the start button located in the desktop UI it will STILL direct you to metro UI??

Seems hard to believe.

Legacy, no offense but I've always considered you a caricature or parody. I'm sorry, but I really can't believe anyone could hate something so badly without taking some steps to help himself. A simple google search would have brought up a couple of very simple ways to make sure the start screen will never turn up ever again. These steps are so simple that I could do them in less than 3 minutes.

Am I any more a caricature than other members here that fall all over themselves praising everything about Windows 8.0? They seem to hate anyone that dislikes the Metro UI....and tend to lambaste anyone that dare disagree about 8 being the holy grail of OS.

I don't hate Windows 8 or metro for that matter. What I do intensely DISLIKE is the arrogant way that MS decided to FORCE customers to use Metro UI at any cost, instead of giving us the CHOICE to select which UI we want to use at the default boot.

The fact is that for productivity metro has little or NO use, and the overwhelming majority of users agree with me.

I don't take any offense because the truth can't be argued and the customers have spoken. The fact that MS decided to offer default boot to desktop confirms that as well.

Now only if we can get MS to put the function of the start button back to a traditional menu format as it was in Windows 7 and previous versions. It seems USELESS to design it the way they have all it does is annoy, and frustrate desktop users.

If folks want to get to the metro UI perhaps MS could simply develop a short cut to it on the desktop as an option...how about it?

We don't know that the overwhelming majority of users agree with you. There's no data on it. All we have are a few loud mouths that don't like metro. And everyone knows that people who like a product or are indifferent rarely say anything at all. It's only the ones that are extremely displeased that would go online to write a dozen negative reviews, hold press conferences, and threaten to move to Canada to breed with the natives there.

I don't take any offense because the truth can't be argued and the customers have spoken. The fact that MS decided to offer default boot to desktop confirms that as well.
Not really. It only proves that MS is willing to take the extra step to shut the loud mouths up.

Now only if we can get MS to put the function of the start button back to a traditional menu format as it was in Windows 7 and previous versions. It seems USELESS to design it the way they have all it does is annoy, and frustrate desktop users.

I actually agree with you that MS should put the start menu function back in, if only to shut some people up. I'm indifferent about it. I don't really care if there's a start menu or not. I'll tell you this, though. I have classic shell installed, and I haven't touched since my initial test after I installed it.

I do, however, appreciate MS forcing me to move beyond the start menu.

I was really used to windows xp. When vista came out, I tried it and then rapidly downgraded to xp. When 7 came out, I refused to upgrade to it for a long time. Then finally a couple years ago I decided to upgrade. You know what the first thing I did was? Changed over to classic view and never touched the search. Whenever I needed to open a program, I'd search through the start menu. Sometimes when I'm tired, I'd spend like 10 minutes just trying to search for what I was looking for. Using the search function never occurred to me.

When I finally got 8, I hated the fact that there was no start menu. I had to for once use the search function. So, instead of spending several minutes searching through the start menu to get what I needed, I could just use the search function that takes 1 second.

So, yes, if anything I'm really glad MS forced me to move on beyond the start menu. So, despite me having one nowadays I still don't use it at all. It's a vestigial part of windows, IMHO.

But I also understand that there are die-hards out there. I used to be one. So, yes, I really do believe that MS would bring the start menu back if only to shut people up.

Shut people up? That is a curious way to describe responding to customer feedback. The customers are the people that keep MS in business. I expect they are grateful for customer feedback.

Maybe because Microsoft thinks the customer is flat out wrong.

A few loud mouths is not adequate data. Might as well have no data.

As I've explained before, this applies to everything out there. The satisfied customers and the customers that are indifferent rarely say anything. And normally, the ones that are slightly unhappy also don't say anything. It's the ones that are really unhappy that will want the world to know they are unhappy. These individuals will do anything/everything to get the world's attention. Often times, they will exaggerate their unhappiness. If businesses follow their procedures based on these few loud mouths, every business would be out of business.

Seeing a few angry geeks here and there demanding that it's a life and death situation that the start button must be brought back right away is hardly adequate or valid data. Although I have to admit that they are causing enough distraction that MS is willing to yield to their demands.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again. In real life I've not met a single person who's so angry at windows 8 as some people on here. Everybody I know who uses windows 8 are either happy with it or indifferent about it. Real people don't care about the UI changes. They will use whatever software that came with the PC they bought.

So, yes, I really do believe that MS would bring the start menu back if only to shut people up.

As I explained above, yes, I agree that the customers are the people who keep MS in business. Notice that I say customers, not a few angry loud mouths.

Again, I haven't met any real live person who's oppose to the windows 8 UI. If you guys are as many as you claim to be, then I should at least have met 1 of you out there. And yet I've met none. Nada. Zip. None.

And again, I'm not saying the people I know in real life are really happy with windows 8. I'm saying almost all of them are indifferent about the UI changes.

And please don't point to the PC sales slump as proof that you guys are many. PC sales took a nose dive long before windows 8 came out. It just proves that we're seeing a paradigm shift in people's preferences.

Hi there
The Start button IMO is an irrelevance UNLESS the USER can link it to an application the USER wants to run such as open a custom toolbar. What I (and zillions of others I suspect too) need fixed is the INSTALL procedure -- when you install a classic large windows desktop application (for example the complete Visual Studio suite) every snivelling .EXE file creates its own tile which leaves a real mess -- especially as these tiles could be ANYWHERE on the start screen - not necessarily located with the main application. It's a huge DOGS DINNER of a mess.

Also endless scrolling is really hideous -- even on a mobile phone I'm beginning to find this type of interface incredibly annoying -- and remember it's quite easy to install several HUNDRED apps on the modern smart phones.

At least on W8 there's a quick launch task bar -. I'd love to lock up the person who dreamed up this vile interface into a room with a modern mobile phone where he / she would have to spend an entire week using the phone 12 times an hour - but having to scroll the screen 30 times before using ANY application !!!.

Cheers
jimbo

Haha, funny stuff there.

Still do not know a person other than myself using w8 personally. Not a single clan member will go near it, the few that did months ago tossed it after a day or two and none of them have any intention of trying any other version of w8, blue, 8.1 or whatever foolishness MS comes up with next.

And when you talk about loud mouths please go get a mirror and have a good look dude.

Glad you like your phone interface on a pc, me not so much. If I had to use metro I would toss w8 in a second.

Hi there
I don't even like the phone interface on a PHONE -- it gets ridiculous as you get more apps installed -- and the whole point of some apps is that they ARE convenient when travelling. IMO a far better system for a phone once you get a lot of apps would be to have a "Quick launch" system where you could just tap a key to start the app or type say # + the start letter(s) of the app you want to run -- I HATE the endless scrolling.

On a Touch PC as well I can't see what would be wrong with the quick Key system either.

Cheers
