That area is probably the most protected spot on your computer and it was never designed for mere mortals to mess with.

I don't know what you are trying to do, but if you are trying to fix some corruption, maybe you should look at the 'SFC' command.

At an elevated command prompt, you can run 'sfc /scannow' to validate and fix most of these files.

If you just want to see if something is bad, without attempting a fix: 'sfc /verifyonly'.

Type 'sfc /?' for help and check my spelling.

I just drag & drop or copy & paste to the system 32 folder.
No problems.

If you want to, just take ownership of the system 32 folder.

Taking ownership of the whole C:\ drive isn't necessary.

Taking ownership is not recommended for System32 folder due to sensitive default file properties within it. To make-a sound-a like-a English: It can mess things up now or in the future.

Take ownership is not in the right click menu by default, but rather a file must be merged to the registry to get the ability to use that command without the command prompt:

Take Ownership Shortcut - Windows 7 Help Forums

I'm not on Windows 8 now, but probably the easiest and safest way for a default 8 install to put files in Windows32 folder is to open up Windows Explorer with Admin privileges. You can probably do that by typing Windows Explorer (or explorer.exe) in the Start screen, then right click what it finds, then choose "Run as admin"....but like I said....I'm not on 8 now, so I didn't test or look at any of these steps just now.

If those steps are wrong, sorry about that. In that case, perhaps someone currently on 8 will chime in.

You're welcome.
Glad you got it working.

I have "heard" taking ownership of something will cause problems "later on down the road".

But No one ever says what the "problems" will be specifically.

I "own" most of my computer & have no "problems".

It runs just fine. :)

I think the main reason for allowing 'TrustedInstaller' to be the owner of the System folders is so that no piece of software could write there (e.g. a virus) unless it acquired some elevated privileges.

If you 'own' these things, a virus could do a lot more damage if it was running as 'you'.

The security model, the inheritance of privileges, etc., all depend on these settings to remain as they are.

My anti-virus programs & firewall do a good job.

If I was to write a virus, I would name it Trusted Installer & give it elevated privileges.
Or Owner,System,Administrator, etc., etc. .

If I ever have a problem caused by taking ownership, I will post it. :)

Has anyone here had a problem because they took ownership ?
Please post if you have.

It's not just the "System32" folder, that particular folder, contains a whole mess of heavy duty Snap-Ins for the Management Console.

I don't get it, I was able to drop a file right in there, it asked me for permission, then it dropped it right in. Trusted Installer does not even have full access, User has some access, I would try to elevate "User" and then try again - The security on Windows 8 Folders is difficult to modify, you have to add the user under "audit" then then again in "permissions"
