I want to make a slideshow. How can I move and rearrange pictures into a new order and freeze it by give them all a new name? This was easily done in windows XP. Does anyone know a way to do this in windows 8?

Do you want to make a slideshow like in powerpoint?

There are free alternatives to powerpoint

Im not sure exactly what you mean by freeze.. But these programs should let you pause any picture for any length of time before continuing..

Well, lets say I take 400 pictures and download them into a folder. In that folder I want to change place for most of them, you know I don't want them in the order that I took them with the camera. When I try to rearrange them they fall back to the original place, in other words, I cant move them in the order I want them apper. I could do that in XP and save them in that position by give them all a new name. (freezing them into that new position) I have slideshow programs were I can put pics in any order I like but I want to change the order once and for all on the harddisc in the orginal folder, it spare me a lot of time and work. Thanks for the attention :)

From Vista onwards I think Microsoft removed the feature to turn Auto-arrange off in the File Explorer.

I was going to suggest adding your photo folder to a Windows 'Library' then dragging and dropping them into a new Playlist within Windows Media Player to create a slideshow. However, if you already have a slideshow program and just want to rename all your photos, you could use a third party tool.

Faststone Image Viewer looks like it will do it. I don't have it installed to try it, but looking at the screenshot it looks like it will allow you to add them to the right hand pane in a non-sorted order, then batch rename them in your own numerical order (it looks like there's an icon above the source list to change to thumbnail mode too). It's free for home use, so you could give it a try and see how you get on with it.

A similar question was put on the Windows7 forum, almost verbatim to yours, Brink an administrator here and in win7forum may have your solution, but it seems very risky. Ill let you read the thread and you decide if its worth the risk or if its even what you want.

I recommend you contact him here, hes probably online now and ask him if its ok to run in Windows 8..

Hello that link and BRINK is the reason why I ended up here on 8forum. It was given to me by a swedish computer magazine.

consider it's to risky for me and I'm not sure it should have solved the issue. ARC1020 idea did. Thanks for your support

I forgot ...

I forgot to mention that IrfanView can also:
  • Play audio files (mp3 and wav. It doesn't like FLAC)
  • Play video files (I've tried x264, 3gp and mpeg-4)
  • Display text files
  • Display PDF files (requires Ghostscript)

There is a plugin pack for IrfanView.
I suspect that the formats it can handle, are probably determined by the pack and which codecs you have installed in your OS.

@ Lasulii

Im glad you found what youre looking for. (cudos Arc1020)

Im not big on registry editing, I do it only when I dont want to reinstall an OS thats acting glitchy...

I do remember your point about not being forced to sort in XP and previous...

Dont forget to thumbs up on Arc1020 and mark this thread as solved..

Enjoy
