Windows 8 Sudden crashes...

Hi all,

I have a custom built system running Windows 8. I recently changed the Sata port config, changing one of my drives to another port that was supposed to be for a case esata port. After this, my hard drives would not work together and the computer would randomly crash when I try to access My Computer or anything that makes the hard drives run. It's really hard to use as my programs/files are spread across these three drives.

Specs:
CPU: Core i5 3570K
Mobo: ASRock Z77 Extreme4
RAM: Samsung DDR3-1600 RAM
GFX Card: GTX 580
SSD: 120GB Mushkin Chronos (boot drive)
HDD: 500GB Seagate Barracuda
HDD: 1TB Seagate Pipeline HD
PSU: Corsair CX600 V2

The build has been around since last october iirc.

Thanks in advance,
4chan

I'm not sure, but consult your mobo manual, but in order to use all or certain SATA ports the AHCI driver must be installed and enabled and done before the OS is installed.

Do you know if it was originally in a raid configuration? If it was you cannot move them.

Also in the bios youll have to see how the drives were initiated under SATA whether it was AHCI or IDE

Welcome "Anonymous" - Yes - My Media System is the same way - It is actually a "JBOD" array and although the drives appear to be separate drives, the systems sees them as a "Just a Bunch of Disks" array. Two of my disks, one of them the system drive, are external. I have to keep them on the same slots all the time. Put it back the way you had it, see if it returns to normal.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Put things back as they were, does it work?

Yes, that's what I did, but the esata port doesn't work when it was in the original way. I forgot to try if the esata port works when it is in the "crashy" way

I believe I have all the drivers installed...I hope.

The drives are in AHCI right now, as they've always been.

It works on normal, but I really want to get my external esata port working, or I bought the HAF922 for no reason haha

I'm pretty sure it worked a while back when I didn't have that many internal drives.

Your external drive is the system drive? I'd just get a nice Box for it and keep it hooked up that way. You only have one esata slot? You can buy Sata connectors that stick Sata connections on the back of the system, that's what I use. They used to sell these Kingwin external cases, the cases were great but the electronics were crappy. So I took the electronics out of a Nexstar case and stuck that in, and it works great. The Kingwin electronics would fry cos of an insufficient cooling fan.

lolwut, my system drive is an internal ssd lol

The problem is that the current configuration I have now doesn't let the esata port on my case work, but if I switch up the configuration, the computer crashes when it tries to access the drives.

There's no way in hell I would consider Kingwin anything lol

4CHAN is the ESATA an add-on card?

I have an ESATA add-on card with 4 ports, 2 internal SATA and 2 external ESATA, the problem is it wont use all 4, there are jumpers for me to either use the 2 internal, 2 external, or 1 of each but not all 4 at the same time..

Maybe thats your issue... Did the ESATA ever work with the 2 internal ones being in use?

Maybe add another card or get an ESATA bracket that connects to a regular SATA motherboard connection.

So when you ADD a drive to the configuration that's when the trouble starts - Was it a blank drive to begin with, or did it have stuff on it? I don't see how just adding a SATA drive would cause errors, unless there were some system files on the drive or a virus, is the drive clean? I;d scan it on another puter. You should also CHKDSK it too.

Like Brooklyn's asking, is the port part of the Motherboard, or is it an extension from the board Cos if you got 4 Sata slots on the board, you might want to check if the one that's causing problems is blue, or a different colour - It may be intended for an optical device. I have a Dell Workstation which has one blue port, its supposed to be used for optical drive. Or maybe it is new fast sata slot, what are they, 6gb/s?

Now that I think of it, I was using Windows 8 on that machine until I broke it apart recently. I had one 320 IDE drive, but I was adding SATA drives to it and it was not affecting the way the system was running. So maybe that slot is different than the others somehow,

Yah, nobody liked those Kingwin cases, I have a pile of them that are broken, I gut them and stick parts from Nexstar cases in em, heh.
