Change file type associations?

I've already tried several things here.

Default programs> Set your default programs > (Program name goes here) > Choose defaults for this program.

Even though Firefox is already registered with file types such as: .html, .htm, .ftp, etc, it won't let me uncheck them as well as for other programs.

I don't want to change the Firefox associations, though.

I've also tried

Default programs > Associate a file type or protocol with a program

To no avail either.

FileTypesMan didn't help much of either.

It appears third party software and the usual method, aka Default programs, can no longer change some file type associations so easily now.

Any help here?

Windows 8 Enterprise x86

"assoc" and "ftype" in a command prompt will show you a lot of info.

Find the association and then use the default editor to change things.

If you like, you could also change the default program association of file types by right clicking on the file, and using "Open with". You will have the choice to always or just this one time to open the file with the selected program.

I have tried this, associations like .ico do in fact register with my favorite image viewer: XnView, but for some reason XnView won't display .ico and other file types, I'm guessing it's because it's not under set defaults.

I've tried deleting the association via FileTypesMan as well, still no avail.

XnView will still open .ico files:

The file type associations model has changed in Windows 8. In short, if a file type is already associated with a program, you can't change it from within another program. Everything must be handled through system dialogs, such as

• Default Programs in the Control Panel
• Open With dialog
• a new notification "You have new apps..."

The idea is to put the user in control and prevent other programs changing file associations without user approval.

IrfanView is an example of incompatibility with Windows 8. You can set checkboxes during or after install, but they won't affect file types already associated with other software. It can only take over file types that have not been associated.

Firefox is an example of compatibility with Windows 8. If you have, say, IE as default and try to set Firefox as default from its settings, you'll see a system dialog. In other words, Firefox calls a system dialog, so you can set the default browser, which is basically HTTP/HTTPS protocol handling and HTML/HTM file association.

If you want to associate file types with another program, you've got three main options:

1. In "Set your default program" make it default for all types its registered for or choose defaults
2. In "Associate a file type or protocol with a program" choose a program for a specific file type
3. Right-click a file - Open With - choose a program

Well, there's another option in a form of a new program notification that you see first when you install a compatible program. But if you skipped it, these three options work. And they work pretty much the same way as in Windows 7
