Hello 8forums,

Really great forum here and I'm glad to join. If I posted this in the wrong section I apologize.

Okay now here's my problem. I'm currently trying to setup Windows Server 2012 for my dad. The main thing it will be used for is storage of movies, photos and backing up Excel documents for work. This is a copy a friend burned him onto a disk and is currently NOT activated. He wanted to check it out before purchasing the license. I have installed it onto an old HP Pavilion a1640n and everything went fine with installation but, now that it is installed I cannot connect his Win8 computer to it. I have Googled this and found a method but, it doesn't work. I'm told to open a browser and enter in the address bar " HTTP://Server-name/connect " (Server-name replaced with then name of his server) and I should get a connector software download page. I do not get this software download page I just get a server not found page. I have tried entering other possibilities into the address bar, too (192.168.0.xxx/connect, adding .com etc.) nothing works. If I can get any help with this it would be appreciated.

I have tried:

Completely reinstalled Windows Server 2012
Reinstalled Ethernet drivers on the WS2012 box

Things they may be causing the problem:

As I said the Windows Server 2012 is not activated.
The WS2012 box is stuck on public network type and the W8 box is stuck on private network type.
The WS2012 box does not show up on my network on the W8 box but, I have my laptop with Win7 and it shows up on there (Win8 is connected through Ethernet WIn7 laptop is WiFi)

This may be a simple problem and I'm just overlooking something. If this is a common problem and has been answered before please just direct me to a link for help.

Are you trying to access the server from a remote location using a local IP non outside routable address? Why are you trying to go through IE to get to the server?

I believe the Windows 8 machine or more directly, the User name, password etc. needs to be added to the active directory of server 2012 before it will allow the client to connect to the server.

Paul Thurrott describes the procedure of connecting to a Domain in the following link.

Although you can connect to the server without having to set up a Domain, you can also connect Windows Home, core or basic versions to a server according to this Thurrott link.
