I tried searching this topic with no luck. My apologies as I'm sure this has been asked before.

I need to see my thumbnails. 99% of my files are Photoshops and I need to see them, not the PS icon. I can only find "Show Icons Oly - Not Thumbnails" in my advanced folder settings. How do I do the opposite. Show all thumbnails - not icons? Many thank yous in advance!:D

Hi there

There are a few free get arounds but these don't seem to work reliably.

64 bit systems particularly give problems -- Adobe stopped the psd file thumbnail integration with Windows (File) explorer a while ago.

A 15 USD solution is available -- normally I always try and find free stuff but if you are doing a LOT of photoshop work with psd files then this seems to me a worthwhile investment. Works with W8 64 bit systems too.

FastPictureViewer Codec Pack: PSD, CR2, NEF, DNG RAW codecs (and more) for Windows 8 Desktop, Windows 7, Windows Vista and XP

Cheers

As Jimbo mentioned, it's because there's no codec installed to view PSD thumbnails.

But just to add, personally I would move to using TIFF instead of PSD. You can do everything with a TIFF you can with a PSD, but TIFF is much more flexible.

If you have Photoshop then you should have "Bridge" which allows you to view PS photos.

Hi there
I think some have misunderstood the posts.

It's not whether the OP uses GIMP / Photoshop or whatever -- all these applications can view all sorts of "picture" or image type files. What the OP wants is simply to quickly use Windows explorer (or file explorer as it's now called) to get a quick view of the image without having to open or start any other application.

jpg / png files are COMPRESSED files so you lose resolution every time these are opened and modified -- plus of course you can't handle things like Layers, RAW camera files, CMYK colour schemes for pre-press etc.

I don't know how the OP is using photo shop but there are loads of reasons as to why he might want the .PSD format.

Incidentally jpg and png files display decent thumbnails in Windows explorer .

Cheers
jimbo

That is what I thought. Maybe all photo files were set to open with Photoshop as a default while the poster was installing the Photoshop.
To be able to view thumbnails, associate your photo files with a windows default program for viewing pictures such as Windows Photo Viewer. To do this, go to Control Panel>>>Default Programs>>>Associate a file type or protocol with a program>>> and then choose all photo file types then Click "Change Program" on upper right corner.

The original poster may have to settle for an app to view the psd thumbnails.
Irfanview & Irfanview Thumbnails support .psd files for viewing.
I just tested it.
A picture:

If all the .psd files are in one location, it would be easy to view them.
Irfanview Thumbnails is vastly easier to use than GIMP.

If you have photoshop installed, it should show PSD thumbnails. But you have to TELL it to.

Find a PSD file, right click on it, and hit "Generate Thumbnails" - THIS is Photoshop 7, it adds a property sheet to PSD files:

I think Photoshop 7 was the last version to have that option in the dialogue box and it was removed from CS onwards.

Actually, I think I may have been unclear. What I meant to say is that with Photoshop open, when I go to File>Open using XP or 7, my folder displayed thumbnails in the Look In> window. I'd select the folder (eg: Bolt-Neck Guitars) and I could see all of the images whether small, medium or large was selected, jpeg or psd. With Windows 8, having selected "All Types" I see only the jpegs as thumbnails. The Photoshop files have only the PS icon. The trouble with that is I often have several versions of a file or revisions, and if want to go back to an earlier one, I have to open each file individually to see if it's the right one. I can't Save As a different format because those files are in Layers.

I mainly design guitars, and I have lots of parts files that I build with. Fretboards with dots; with diamonds; with abalone; mother of pearl; in ebony; rosewood; maple; bridges in chrome, black, gold, those in 6-string, 7-string, 8-string, etc. Literally hundreds of parts, and reading through the file names is time consuming. Being able to open a folder and seeing them all as thumbnails lets me breeze through the small stuff and work on the design much more quickly. This problem just stalls me at every turn.
