My wife and I needed a new computer because our Toshiba Satellite laptop was just too old to be of service anymore. We had a choice between a Mac laptop or a computer with Windows 8. After browsing around we settled on the Sony Vaio SVJ20215CXB. Two reasons: 1) we both do a lot of work with MS Word and PowerPoint and 2) we both have iphones and a ipad and wanted something different because Apple seems to have gotten stale.

After a week of playing with Windows 8 we have some questions that hopefully some fellow W8'ers can assist us or at least give us some tips.

First, what we like about windows 8:
1. Programs run very fast
2. Its a very fast startup
3. Live tiles (on the apps that have them) are a plus
4. The Metro screen is like your cluttered desktop from XP but only simplified and exciting
5. The integration between SkyDrive and W8 is great. Very easy to work on a document at work, upload to SkyDrive and work on it at Home and then re-upload it from home so its at your work the next morning. I find Dropbox too buggy and haven't had any annoying issues with Skydrive.

However, here are some problems we have:
1. How do we make the apps split the screen so that we can multitask? (like work on a word doc and check email at the same time?)

2. The integration between the old desktop and the metro is bad. (for example in W8 there are a few pc settings but have to go back to the old desktop to find the rest of the settings. Likewise with documents, if you want a folder to store documents you have to save them on the old desktop). Why not do away with the old desk top? MS really needs to pick one format and stick with it.

3. When viewing photos in W8, they take up the entire screen. How do we make them smaller? Our screen is 20 inches and we don't need to view photos on the entire screen.

4. How do we make the address bar in IE10 always appear? I don't like the constant swiping up inorder to make it appear and likewise swiping down to make my tabs appear. Its very touch-unfriendly.

5. Why is there no permanent clock? Again, we have to swipe up for it to appear? That's silly and gets old.

6. I was downstairs one morning and I heard my computer notification go off. When I got back to the computer there was no notification. Why isn't there a notification page that shows you what you missed? You would have thought that would be a must? If I were a app developer why would I make a app with notifications if you cant store them?

7. The Windows app store is bad. First, they say they have 50,000 apps but where are they? When we select a app store category we see some but theres no way there are 50,000 viewable. Are we missing a feature that shows us more? Also, the icons/layout within the app store category's are amateurish at best. Very ugly. Like something a highschool student created in photoshop.

8. If we have a word document, and its on the old desktop, how do we make it a tile on metro?

9. My final complaint is that Microsoft did not release a tutorial video when we first turned on Windows 8. Its as if MS just expected us to know how to operate and use windows 8?. If me and my wife were struggling with it then how is your everyday user going to react??

Overall, it looks like we are using a beta version and doesn't seem to fit the quality of MS products.

Would love to read anyone else's opinions/tips.

thanks

Hi Brking and welcome to Eightforums.

You've certainly made an effort to describe your question very well. I appreciate that! Let me see if I can help you out with your questions.

I second that!!! It is indeed a great OS!

1. How do we make the apps split the screen so that we can multitask? (like work on a word doc and check email at the same time?)

Right now this is not yet possible. You can move one app to the right or left corner so that you have two open apps with a 20% vs 80% split. But.... this summer the Windows 8.1 (aka Blue) update is coming. And this update will give you the possibility to put 2 or even 4 apps in a splitscreen setup.
So just be patient for a few more months.

Some folks like the "desktop modus" and some folks want to do everything in Metro modus. I guess you have to get used to this. Although the Blue update will provide a Windows Explorer Metro stype app.

3. When viewing photos in W8, they take up the entire screen. How do we make them smaller? Our screen is 20 inches and we don't need to view photos on the entire screen.

You can wait for the Blue update :) or you can use Windows Picture Viewer which will start in the Desktop environment. There you can make the screen as small as you like.

4. How do we make the address bar in IE10 always appear? I don't like the constant swiping up inorder to make it appear and likewise swiping down to make my tabs appear. Its very touch-unfriendly.

Don't know if that is possible with the IE10 Metro App. The IE10 Desktop version has the option to show the addressbar all the time.

5. Why is there no permanent clock? Again, we have to swipe up for it to appear? That's silly and gets old.

Yes....you are so true there. Perhaps Blue will bring back the clock in Start. Another option is to use the program Decor8 - Personalize the Windows® 8 Start screen with Decor8™!. That will show a clock in Start and give you the options to change your Start significantly. I really love this program!

6. I was downstairs one morning and I heard my computer notification go off. When I got back to the computer there was no notification. Why isn't there a notification page that shows you what you missed? You would have thought that would be a must? If I were a app developer why would I make a app with notifications if you cant store them?

Yup....you are so right! There is not yet a possibility to see the notifications that you've missed. Perhaps Blue will make this happen?

The appstore is by default locallized. So it will only show the apps in your native language. You have to change the settings so that is will show all the apps. In the store app go to the charms bar and then settings. The tab preferences. Select both questions with NO.
Search the appstore for a * (asterix) to see all the apps there are.

8. My final complaint is that Microsoft did not release a tutorial video when we first turned on Windows 8. Its as if MS just expected us to know how to operate and use windows 8?. If me and my wife were struggling with it then how is your everyday user going to react??

At www.microsoft.com you can find lots of instruction video's! Enjoy watching them.

Ok... I hope I have been helpfull for you. At least it is a long text to read .

Good luck.

... try this one also. Apps can be snapped on the desktop or minimized to thumbnails.
The control keys are Win + Tab (hold Winkey and tab, tab, tab)
Also task switching is Alt + Tab (hold Alt key and tab, tab, tab)

Will you sell me your Toshiba Satellite? :) No, heh, well, welcome to Windows 8, it runs the desktop pretty much the same as Windows 7 - Only about 12 times faster, but if you have problems you have to always allow the Automatic Repair tool to run fully, there is no cheating like we had in XP or 7 where we could cancel a schedules disk scan, if you restart in the middle of an automatic repair procedure, it could hose your system good. Hopefully you'll be OK but if you have any trouble that's what these forums are for.

Yes....you are so true there. Perhaps Blue will bring back the clock in Start. Another option is to use the program Decor8 - Personalize the Windows® 8 Start screen with Decor8™!. In the w8 settings there is a notification button that says 1 hour, 6 hours, etc. What does it do?

Decor8 isn't an 'App' from the Store. It's basically a GUI modification for the new start menu made by Stardock software which has a noteworthy history of creating windows aesthetic modifications; and you should have no fear of purchasing or using any of their products.

Decor8 makes the start menu look pretty sharp and more eye-pleasing depending on your preference.

A lot of store bought machines contain Stardock mods, like "fences" and such. If yours came with Decor8 that may have been an addon bought by the maker and given to you gratis to try out if it is trial or to keep if it is full. I used to run "Fences" in Windows 7 until I discovered it was slowing my system down by an enormous factor. It's the same reason why all HPs contain just about every "Wild Tangent" "game" in the world - You can either keep these things or remove them. When I buy a new machine I prefer it to have nothing on it but the OS and the drivers it needs, I do most of my own mods and I have my own programs I don't need trial this or trial that.

we settled on the Sony Vaio SVJ20215CXB.

However, here are some problems we have:

2. there are a few pc settings but have to go back to the old desktop to find the rest of the settings. Likewise with documents, if you want a folder to store documents you have to save them on the old desktop).

3. When viewing photos in W8. How do we make them smaller?

7. theres no way there are 50,000 viewable. Are we missing a feature that shows us more?

9. My final complaint is that Microsoft did not release a tutorial video when we first turned on Windows 8.

I see that you have a touchscreen?

1) To split the screen for multitasking:
with a mouse, move the cursor to the top edge of the screen, hold down the primary mouse button and then drag the app to the side of the screen. then open the start screen again and go to desktop. so them running side by side should look like this.

with a touchscreen, you do the same thing but only with your finger. put your finger on the top edge of the screen, then drag your to the side of the screen that you want the app. then bring up the start screen to set what's on your desktop side.
1el2k0.jpg

Now, you can drag the bar in the middle with either the mouse or your finger and you see a fuller version of the app and then a thumbnail view of your desktop apps. with the mouse, you can also double-click on the bar to quickly switch proportions.

52g8w0.jpg

After the 8.1 update, you'll be able to arbitrarily set the split.

2) The Windows 8.1 update will also be moving more settings to the Metro side so that the split control panel is not so weird.

3) for the Photo app, if you don't "open" the picture, you should see a filmstrip of your pictures to allow you to see more pictures at once.

358rpma.jpg

7) make sure these settings are turned OFF in the settings for the store app. also remember that the charms bar is contextual. so once you have the store app open, the settings on the charms bar is the settings for the store app.

152ngg9.jpg

I think they need to rephrase these sentences. Because to me, it reads like this... I have US English as my default language. So naturally, I read these sentences and it seems like I would want them ON in order to only show English languages. BUT NO!!!! If you set these to ON, you will only see about 20% of apps in the windows store. I didn't realize this until I set up my father's computer and his PC couldn't see any of the apps my PC could see. It took me quite awhile to see how I set up his computer different.

9) yes, there should be a better tutorial on how to use the OS. or maybe provide some sort of text pop-ups to point people in the right direction.

I think what Microsoft believes is that there's really only 4 things to know with a touchscreen since there's 4 sides to a monitor. they want you to swipe from each side to see what happens. the charms bar is contextual so it's always adjusting to the app in question. so you always know where the search is. you always know where the settings is. rather than finding it on the menu bar of a traditional app. the swipes from the top or bottom are the same as the right-mouse click and will always bring up the context menu. so with every app, as long as you swipe from all 4 sides and right-click every app to see what the options are, that's really all there is to know.

like I'll take the Wikipedia app as an example (it's a fabulous app by the way; but they need to improve table support). if you read the reviews, people are confused how to search for things because there's no traditional address bar. but it's in the charms bar. remember, it's contextual. so if you're running Wikipedia, the search will search in Wikipedia. it's just that people are so used to a traditional bar that's always on the screen.

another issue is people are so used to other systems and it takes time to adapt. for example, to copy and paste text on iOS, you have to hold down the button and wait and then do your operation. but with windows 8, it's all quick taps. you tap it, move the bar to cover the text you want and then tap again to copy/paste. tap, tap, tap. but if you're used to iOS, you'll be confused.

thanks so much for the detailed help for the side by side app display. I will try these out tomorrow, too tired of playing with W8 to try tonight.

And for your suggestion for the app store, I turned both off and it still has the same amount of apps as before. (example: In the Entertainment section there are 100 apps in the Top Free section and 100 apps in the New Release section) and that is the same number as before your suggestion.

don't go to the "top ___" sections. that's a ranked section that's a fixed amount. you have to actually browse through the entire section. so if you want to browse games, you have to click/tap on Games. not click on top paid or top free or new releases.

This doesn't make it forever visible but is easier than swiping or focusing mouse. Since you are going to be typing anyway:

Or you could Press F4 instead if you want address bar to appear with previous entries to click on as well

Thanks. Now I see all of them. That is just another example of MS not thinking it through. There was no way in the world I would have ever thought to click the text when all the focus is on the tile boxes (New releases, top free, top paid, etc..)

Thanks but the way you said wont work because right off the bat you said its not forever. I did find a solution on my own and its ridiculous that MS doesn't tell you how to do it.

1) On the metro screen, right click on the standard Word or Excel tile.
2) Click open file location
3) This opens the location in Explorer on the old desktop
4) For the document you want to make a W8 tile, right click on it and make it a shortcut
5) Now click and drag the word/excel/powerpoint doc (that you made a shortcut) and drag it to the folder that houses the standard Word tile on Metro
6) Presto, individual word docs are now tiles (note: if you don't see it, go to the "All Apps" section (bottom right of screen) and look in the app list and pin it to your start screen

How ridiculous is it that this is not explained?

somewhere between steps 3 and 4, I'm lost... when you open file location, it just opens up the folder containing shortcuts. are we supposed to copy the files to this shortcuts folder?

Right, if you right click on a tile in the Metro desktop and at the bottom of the screen there is a button to "Open File Location". Clicking that will open up the File Explorer on the old desktop screen. Now, copy or drag a file (that isn't on the Metro desktop) into that file explorer folder that opened.

Does anyone know how to make a document a tile on the Metro start menu?

Also, there is a option in the settings side bar for Notifications (1 hour, 3 hours, etc..). Anyone know where these notifications are?

thanks

"Pin to Start" Files in Windows 8

4. How do we make the address bar in IE10 always appear? I don't like the constant swiping up inorder to make it appear and likewise swiping down to make my tabs appear. Its very touch-unfriendly.

This doesn't make it forever visible but is easier than swiping or focusing mouse. Since you are going to be typing anyway:

Press F6 for address bar to appear ... type away —

Or you could Press F4 instead if you want address bar to appear with previous entries to click on as well

4) Click and drag the word/excel/powerpoint docs from your old desktop and drag them to the folder that houses the standard Word tile
5) Presto, individual word docs are now tiles

How ridiculous is it that this is not explained?

BRKING — Wouldn't it be much easier to right click a file or folder and select Pin to Start than do it all that dragging?
That's why I posted this link for you. "Pin to Start" Files in Windows 8 If that link doesn't work this will http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/15624-pin-start-files-windows-8-a.html

What's the solution to keeping the address bar always visible? Not that I need to know because I always use F4 or F6 because it sets focus of the cursor right into the address bar when I press .

1) When I right click on a word or excel document I don't have a "Pin to Start" option viewable. It looks like I have to alter the registry to do this, correct? If that's the case I am not going to do that because I'm not comfortable enough to do that. It should be a standard feature. Most people are not going to edit their registry for that. Just my opinion.

2) Looks as if there isn't a way to make the address bar always viewable.
