Windows 8 Not Booting Up! Please Help!

Hello, everyone.

My PC was working fine a couple days ago. It booted up perfectly with no issues at all. Out of nowhere, the other day, when I booted up my PC from sleep mode the monitor wouldn't turn on. I tried turning the PC off and back on again and it finally turned on to reveal my desktop after a minute.

Today, I tried turning on the PC from sleep mode again, and the monitor wouldn't turn on at all. So, I tried turning the PC off and back on and it booted up, went to the Windows 8 icon screen with the loading circle just before the lock-screen/login-screen and the monitor just kept shutting off at the loading screen repeatedly.

Finally, it prompted me that Windows 8 had failed to start and suggested to recover/repair it. I did so and it failed. I shut it down at least three more times after that before it worked and let me log in to my desktop. Also, when I booted up my PC the log-in screen icons and other Windows 8 icons were strange squares instead of the usual arrows and whatnot. I have no idea how to fix this either.

I have absolutely no idea what could be causing this problem as my PC was working perfectly just two days ago. Now, I'm worried about turning off my PC and facing the same issue again. If anyone could please help me figure out this issue and hopefully resolve it I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Laptop or Desktop. If Desktop, what about not using Sleep Mode, just use the screen saver and Power settings to turn the display and hard drive off/on as needed?????

Without any specs it is difficult to determine what the problem may be. Go to the CP section and put in your specs so those who are willing to help you can see what your system is along with all the devise you may have connected.

At the moment if I were to guess I would say that it could be your video card. If so you may need to update your video drivers. . .

I tried the refresh and so far it boots up but there's an extremely long period of time when the screen just turns black before it loads up the sign-in screen after it finishes loading. This never used to happen before as it went to the sign-in screen very quickly. Any help or idea as to what could be causing this?

Hi Corrupt

Might try going into "Settings" and do a refresh and see how that works. Good Luck.

BTW, thanks for the specs. . .

I've had numerous problems with scenarios just like this, especially on my Media machine which has Windows 8 spanning two drives. If it is booting up eventually, and working well after it does, check your drivers and make sure you have the best drivers installed, preferably from the companies who made them, although some drivers supplied by Windows 8 work sufficiently.

I never allow my monitor to totally shut down, I always shut it off manually if I leave. Don't allow your machine to go into any sleep modes, either use Hibernation or not at all, avoid any sleep modes that shut off your monitor or other things like PCI cards and network cards.

Also remember that the Windows 8 Automatic Repair system, simply wants to run when it has been scheduled to run, it will not always find something wrong and fix it, it just wants to run it's cycle, so even if it said that it could not find any problems, just restart the computer again and it should boot up normally after that. I have one problem drive that I have to keep running GWscan on, Windows 8 cannot repair it, it only can do a full CHKDSK, which will fail if you have any read element failure. So always use something like Hiren's Boot CD which contains 3rd party Hard Disk tools and "Mini XP" to scan your drives total surface and do a simple CHKDSK from within Mini XP, then restart the PC, and let Windows 8 run through it's Auto Repair cycles. Sometimes this will be about 4 reboots in a row, just keep doing it until it finally shows you that it is loading your Windows 8 user.

I just have to add in here, that sometimes what you see and think is a sleep mode, may have been the system shutting off after catastrophic failure, which is usually shown by a huge blue screen that simply says windows found a problem and has to shut down, it may have shut down your system, and not really have been in any sleep mode at all. I have everything set for the machine to not immediately reboot after one of these new "Blue Screens of Death" - SO if you have anything set to allow an auto restart after a BSOD, shut that off.
