Title says it all, I did an upgrade (admittedly, too lazy to want to reinstall all my programs) from 7 ultimate to 8 Pro (both x64) and now only one of my DVD-RW drives shows up in computer or device manager, and scanning for hardware doesnt help. The drive does show in the BIOS however. Anyone have a fix short of a clean install?

The drive does show in the BIOS however.

As the DVD is not show in BIOS, it is not a Windows problem.

Try this:
1) Shut down PC.
2) Physically disconnect the CD/DVD Drive.
3) Reboot to Windows with NO DVD drive.
4) Shut down PC.
5) Physically reconnect the CD/DVD Drive.
6) Reboot to Windows with DVD drive.
7) Check Device status.

You may have to add it manually - Does it not show even when there are disks in it? Because by default, both Windows 7 and 8 will show no drive letters for the Optical Drive UNLESS there is a disk in the drive. If it is not in the Device Manager, then try to add it. I cant imagine a sata DVD drive not being compatible with Windows 8. But go to the manufacturer's Website, download the latest Firmware for the drive, there are usually Windows EXE files that flash it.

Check these settings: If this box is checked, UN check it:

Ah - Ya should have just done an In-Place install, that usually fixes most errors like this. Sometimes, Windows does this cack, Vista did this to me, after upgrading from XP. I did an In Place install and it was fixed.

Yup, should have, was just trying to save myself an afternoon of doing what I ended up doing. It was overdue anyway, I hadnt formatted and reinstalled in about 18 months.

Ok as long as it works now, and you can reinstall all of your programs and Metro apps, what's great about the Metro stuff, is that it all saved in Skydrive, all ya gotta do is redownload em. The regular apps are not saved there though, you have to make a Windows Backup for those. You can use a Windows Backup with the Windows Refresh, and get it all back. I'm not sure about the process yet.

The same thing happened to me to, out of the blue it just dropped my DVD player. What I did was replace all the sata cables then made sure I had all my drives in order of preference to follow the mobo sata port order. meaning sata port 0 was my C drive, sata port 1 would be my DVD drive, sata port 2 would be my back up drive. I haven't had a problem since.
