The present file format of these personal videos is: .3gp. When I try to play them in Xbox video I get this error message: Can't play because the item's file format isn't supported. Check the store to see if this item is available there. 40 apps open when I did check. Does anybody know which app will play this .3gp format? I can visually play them in Windows Media Player but for some reason there's no sound & it's turned up to full volume. Thanks for any help.

VLC Player on the Desktop is by far the best way to go for video files, hands down.

In about a couple of months however, the VLC development team will have an actual Windows 8 app in the Windows Store that should function in the same fashion as the Desktop app, but modern metro style.

Solved

Thanks 'coke robot'. I downloaded that 'VLC Player' in spite of the fact that my security firm, McAfee, claim it's a 'dangerous' site. I don't imagine you've had any problems with it, otherwise I'm sure you wouldn't have recommended it. Anyway it plays my personal videos with .3gp format just fine.

Did you download it from a reputable site like CNET? VLC Player is completely fine, I've never seen security issues with the download sites before...

I downloaded it from the official 'Videolan.org' site, which supposedly is the owner.

    Touchscreen,
Yeah, I agree, McAfee is way over the top in this situation. Kaspersky Internet Security and Windows Defender and AVG, even AVG which freaks out about EVERYTHING do not report problems with videolan.org or VLC player.

It's totally safe though.

Also, expect the VLC app in the Windows Store soon. Some mockups were shown and they're pretty neat. MUCH nicer looking than the Desktop app, as much as capable as the Desktop app.

However guys, it was the only download I did this week & I thought I deleted or disabled all the other garbage while downloading it. I found that my IE on the Start screen started opening on the Desktop. It took me ages to find that 'something' had enabled "Open Internet Explorer tiles on the Desktop" in the 'Programs' tab in 'Internet Options' (the gear icon) at the top right of IE. I'm pretty positive it was due to the download of the VLC Player. I then discovered that an unknown program by the name of 'Yontoo' had arisen in my 'Task Manager' & 'Programs & Features'. I uninstalled it & hope it will stay 'gone'.

Hi there
If McAwful says the Videolan Site is a dubious site then JUNK McAwful. IMO you DO NOT NEED ANY 3rd party AV system on Windows 8 computers -- the built in Windows defender is just as good (or bad) depending on your point of view as all the rest of them and IMO McAfee (McAwful) is just a resource hog.

Literally MILLIONS of computers have downloaded VLC player -- if there were a problem with it this fact would be all over the Internet in seconds.

The only time you would need AV systems installed in W8 is if these W8 computers are client computers on a large company LAN - security for Enterprises is a different ballgame to home computers. Windows 8 built in security system IS FINE.

Cheers
jimbo

    Touchscreen,
I have found mcaffee wholly ineffective in finding anything that is really dangerous, and blocking valid programs. You may be able to set it up to ignore certain types of downloads. perhaps it is blocking all EXE files. But even if it blocks a valid program or website, you should be able to allow it to work. VLC is great but I don't think it can read 3gp files, unless the new version 2.0.6 can do it. 3gp files were usually the format for videos in Palm devices, like my old Treo. I had to install their interface for the device to watch them. I dunno, does VLC play 3gp files now? because back when I had my treo it would not play them.

If you cant find a player that can play these, you can convert them with Leawo Total Video Converter:

Leawo Video Converter Ultimate - Best easy media converter software

They have a number of products of varying price that can do this

Is there any way to private message on this forum? Robin, I'd like to get an example of one of your 3gp files. Is there somewhere you could share it? Dropbox, OneDrive, anywhere.
