Hi there

I just don't understand Ms -- on the one hand they've really improved the start screen's usability (new W8 build - X-64 build 9369 - I've posted a thread on this too in the Forum) but on the other hand they screw something up royally such as the new File explorer.

It's is an ABOMINATION to use with a mouse -- you'd be FOREVER scrolling / clicking. (Fortunately the Old file explorer aka windows explorer still exists).

Here's a screenshot of the new file explorer -- for a DESKTOP this must be the biggest piece of JUNK I've ever seen --and I've seen a lot of it.

Note also if your screen resolution is too low it won't even open -- example shown when I run it in a window in a VM -- on full screen it will work 2nd screen shot. However each blue box when you click on it opens again separately in a NEW full screen Window -- This is almost the Ultimate Horror of Horrors on a desktop.

For Touch on a tablet or smartphone -- possibly -- but a desktop with a MOUSE --forget it.

For a desktop the old method with an expanding TREE structure is fine. How for example does Ms expect you to Cut and Paste between different drives easily with this POS. You either need to be able to see the classic windows explorer tree structure or at least be able to see what's on the SOURCE and TARGET drives TOGETHER to move / copy stuff properly.

Cheers
jimbo

Thanks for the update.

They seem to be viewing traditional pc users as an afterthought, something unfortunate that has to be grudgingly catered to in a basic fashion

Who knows, they may be right.

Wait for the loopy ones to proclaim it is only a testing build, and Blue will be the second coming when released.

Yeah, I agree. They made everything bigger (tile mode) in favor of people using a touchscreen. For touchscreen users, the bigger, the better. There is no way they can use the "TREE" structure explorer with this st*p*d tile mode. With this format, you always have to go back and forth while you are navigating thru it. And what I don't understand is why they designed the back button too small and located on top left (not middle left). Sucks big time for mouse users.

Hi there
passes the time OK. Actually the provenance of these builds is usually OK -- and if some of the complaints get back to Ms they might improve stuff they missed in their "Normal" testing.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if these leaked builds had some sort of quiet tacit approval from Ms anyway even if their public stance is one of "I don't know anything about these".

Lets face it -- a load of us on these Forums are quite likely to have a lot of applications and hardware that Ms developers won't have -- and we can publish our REAL conclusions and feelings --Ms Employees / Testers might also have to "Tow the company line" to keep their jobs or contracts.

Running these as VM's doesn't cause any problems even if the builds aren't legit either. Around 15 - 20 mins to download from a Torrent site and a further 10 mins to install the VM -- so no real time wasted. (advantage of nice mega fast broadband). !! With the last build and around 110 seeders I was getting download speeds of over 15 MB/s -- not bad from a torrent site.

Cheers

Jimbo45,

I understand what you are getting at. I just wish these were officially made available. Could achieve those same results.

At work, i don't want our logs showing me visiting torrent sites. I also don't want to download something and have the company face some type of ramifications because our NAT'd public IP was transferred data to/from some site.

Wish I had that type of bandwidth available. At home, I might get 1.8MB/sec tops, at work it's around 3.5MB/sec.

Hi there
@Mdmd

You *might* have missed the point here
It's not just showing folders on the "C" drive -- but say I want to view folders on C ,D, E, F, G and H drives as well. You can't get this on the SAME screen with the new application.

Of course tablet users won't be bothered with this type of stuff - until they start having peripherals which allow them to connect several drives / USB sticks -- then they will understand what I'm getting at here.

With the classical "Tree" structure -- you can see ALL the drives in one window and just expand the relevant tree.

Cheers

Hi there
Does the File Brick -- not sure what that app is -- allow you to view contents of more that ONE drive on the same screen -- for instance how do you copy files from say in your case from a SUB FOLDER on F to a SUBFOLDER on G. I'm talking about the Standard Ms application here - if you need a 3rd party app then you've shown there is a feature lacking in the basic Ms app that already exists in the OLD file explorer.

I'm not deliberately trying to be obtuse here -- I just want to see if it's possible using the new Apps to do stuff that is really SIMPLE with previous versions of the OS when I'm using a standard laptop with a mouse and keyboard - and no touch hardware.

Cheers

Hi there
@mdmd
You still haven't answered my question whether you can see folders on MORE than one drive at the same time and then cut and paste between them.

Also if the App has to be installed from the store it doesn't say much for the standard app shipped with the OS.

So I'd guess -- No the standard APP is rubbish and you can't use the store for the leaked builds -- so we are wasting time here or "just spinning our wheels".

Cheers

No you can't. You can see any number of drives, but every listing is full screen immersive.
Everything is apparently select > copy > paste immersively.

I'm NOT trying to have a go at you and your input is fine -- but you can see why people without Touch screens are going to have trouble using some of this stuff.

Unless if the app is completed, ehh. I won't be using it as it doesn't seem like I can have two instances of the File Explorer app snapped side by side 50/50 style. I would be a LOT nicer if they used the Radial menu design for the File Explorer app over using the app command bar.
