Unable to delete "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Google" folder

    Unable to delete "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Google" folder


    and its 9.1GB in size! I uninstalled Chrome and deleted registry references of it as well(Google provides a reg file which removes traces) but I just can delete this folder. Any idea why? A restart also did not help matters. Im using Windows 8 Pro.

    Right click on the Google folder and click on "Take Ownership" and if you don't see this option, then download from here: Take Ownership - Add to Context Menu in Windows 8

    Additional info. %LOCALAPPDATA%\Google has 4 folders. I could delete three manually but for "Chrome". This "Chrome" folder is 9.1Gb in size!.

    Can you right click on Chrome folder and rename it to something else, for example: Chrome.old, reboot and try to delete again.

    If still unable to delete, download (32/64 bit): UNLOCKER 1.9.1 BY CEDRICK 'NITCH' COLLOMB.

    Install it but make sure to uncheck any extra add-on then right click on the folder and select unlocker.

    Can you right click on Chrome folder and rename it to something else, for example: Chrome.old, reboot and try to delete again.

    I did this and the folder still didn't go away.

    Installed Unlocker and it said the folder wasn't locked but I selected delete action to get rid of the folder. Since the folder is huge and has a lot of files the process was very slow. Started the process an hour ago and the progress bar has only moved like 10%. Will report back when its done.

    This is strange. 9GB is nothing and should not take that long to delete unless your hard drive is somehow corrupted. If deletion fails, you might want to run chkdsk C: /r /f from the elevated command prompt first then try to delete again.

    I did "chkdsk C: /r /f" and it said that I have to restart for the checking which I did and nothing happened. I did this again and still nothing happened. Then I remembered that there is a check disk option in the disk properties and ran it. Voila! It found errors and fixed them and I restarted the computer again. Deleting the folder after that was a piece of cake.

    You need to run with the elevated command prompt.

    Anyway, I am glad it worked. !!!

    By the way, that Chrome folder is where the databases and caches are kept. They can get quite large and fragmented.
    I make a symlink of that folder and put it on a separate partition from the C: drive.
    If you have other Google apps (like Picassa) they will also use that folder.
