You can create a storage pool with a single drive...you just won't be able to use any of the resiliency functionality, but can expand it later.

So I'm better off getting a new ssd instead.
If they were not so expensive, oh well.

Thanks.

I wouldn't say that. I would get an SSD for the OS and 2 mechanical standard drives for data. This way you could at least duplicate some of your data to protect against drive failure.

Why would you want to use the storage space for one drive? My current set up uses a ssd with windows and a few select programs installed on it and a 1 tb mechanical drive where all other programs as well as my user account is kept. That includes my libraries, downloads, Outlook pst files and all the other junk that collects in the user directory.

Right now OS with the latest updates and the nvidia driver added up to 56GB, I was hoping to use the HDD I have with the ssd using storage space.

something is wrong if the os and just the video driver use that much space. My 60gb ssd with office 2010 and a few other things used 31gb.

I don't know, and I made fresh install. After formatting the ssd it showed 55GB free space, I used the drive before as cache using Intel's rst.

Does it matter if the OS is pro or not?

I use Windows 8 Pro 64 bit. Some things that can use up space are the hibernation file, the page file, unneeded update files, temp files and so on.

Even still, on a fresh install you should only be using around 20 gb or so just for windows even after updating. If you are up to it, I would maybe give it another go, this time following this guide for moving your user files to the hdd. User Profile - Change Default Location - Windows 7 Help Forums

Scroll down and try option two. This option does have some initial requirements though, first when you install choose a user name other than what you normally use for a temp user account. Once windows is installed, modify the registry as directed and then create a new user using your normal user name. You will have to log out of the temp user account into the new one, then delete the temp one and after that all your user files will be stored on the hdd. As for programs, just change the drive location when you install them if you want them on the ssd or hdd.

With two drives now you can work on the other issues. Search this board for instructions on killing the hibernation file which can get rather large, usually around the amount of ram you have installed. Same for moving the page file off the ssd onto the hdd. One last thing, the actual video driver isn't that large, I'm thinking you are referring to the overly large control panel program that comes along with most drivers, see if that can't be moved to a slower drive to save space.

Thanks a lot.
That sounds like a lot of work, but it's worth a shot .

Anyway I'm going to make a backup image of what I've got right now just in case something happens, as I hate to download the my games all over again.
Thanks again.

Hi,
Before trying to do anything, check this file and see how big it is:
C: \ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows\windows.edb
This file is an index file for Windows Search and sometimes can grow really large in many GB's

60GB SSD is plenty for your Windows OS. I have tons of applications installed and it only took 40GB. There might be some junk files, temp files, Windows Updates files laying around eating up space in addition to "windows.edb" file.

As mentioned above, you can relocate the pagefile.sys to D drive. If you don't use quick boot then turn off Hibernation.

Thanks a lot,
But I've already reinstalled the OS again with updates and drivers, now I have 24GB free space left.
I turned drive protection off to stop restore points, is there a way to put restore points on other drives other than C: drive?
I still have MS office left to install.
Quick boot and hibernation is turned off.

Hi there
As far as things like Storage spaces / spanned volumes are concerned - it's your situation -- but IMO on a HOME computer things like RAID / data redundancy etc are grossly overkill - since HDD's are generally reliable and provided your DATA is backed up decently. - Note also for DATA you don't need to back the whole lot every day -- just archive bits off during the week ond only backup data that's CHANGED. For data backup you don't even NEED a special backup program - although these programs simplify the whole exercise - - you could just copy on to backup devices with Windows / File explorer.

Ensure the OS is on a separate drive / partition and DO take an image backup very regularly though.

By using things like RAID you rather REDUCE the amount of online storage you have at any one time -- but IMO on a HOME computer - even if it's being used as a server this is overkill - if a disk fails and you've got decent backups then no problem in recovering them.

I'm using SPANNED volumes at the moment -- I don't care if a volume fails --OK the lot have to be re-created but from Archives it's easy enough to re-create the data and my experience with DESKTOP type HDD's is that they fail very rarely if at all (Laptop HDD's are another issue completely though).

My OS is on an SSD which is separate from the rest - otherwise I have 2 sets of spanned drives ( 8 Disks spanned 4 each with 6TB of space on each set of 4).

Corporate stuff and if you are running a web server available to the "outside" then different circumstances apply - but when I see some HOME computers having the most sophisticated and expensive RAID setups I think "What a waste --it would better to spend that money on some SSD's".

Cheers
jimbo
