Start Screen went blank after Sleep - Can't add icons

RE: Windows 8.

Something strange happened. I put my computer in sleep mode, as I have done many times. But this time, after I brought it back on, my Start Screen was missing all the tiles. AND, I can't put them back. When I click the "All Apps" button at the bottom, my screen just goes blank.

My desktop works, so I haven't lost anything. Just have a totally disfunctional Start Screen.

Symptoms:
1) After boot, I'm at the Start Screen.

2) The screen isn't blank. It's got the background and the START in the corner. It's just blank of tiles. There are no tiles on my Start screen.

3) If I go to bottom and right click, I see "All Apps" and if I click that, the screen then goes blank, and the background changes. The screen is totally blank and nothing works except the side menus. There are no tiles listed and no text on the screen.

I've googled this problem and see this is a known issue, except with slightly different symptoms. But I can't get it resolved. All suggestions require going to Microsoft's Site, for this problem. They say that you have to use the hotfix. I contacted Microsoft, from that site and they sent me an email with a link that just takes me back to the site.

I've run SCF and it found no problems.

I have gone through a complete update, using Windows update and it didn't fix the problem. Need a solution to this.

Where on earth is this hotfix (a link to the actual hotfix; not some website that goes round and round).
I don't have the revovery discs so I can't use that.

If there's really a fix, where the heck is it? Anyone know of the fix that will fix this problem. Not something you've read about but actually tried. If you have not had this problem, you probably can't help, because I can google and read too. ;)

I got the same email but when I tried running the program it came back with "This update not for this computer" or something like that and wouldn't run.

I did run SFC /scannow but it found nothing wrong. I'm running dism now and will rerun sfc.

This is very frustrating. Nothing seems to work.

I googled your problem & that was the hot fix I got.
Oh Well.

Maybe someone else will try to help.

I have tried the dism command myself & it fixed things sfc could not fix.

How long is this dism check supposed to take? It's been almost 15 minutes and it's still stuck on 20%

It takes a while.
When I ran it it jumped from 20% to 40% etc.

It will finish.Give it time. :)

Both have completed. I did a restart and have the same problem. A completely blank Start screen. ALL APPS goes blank. And even the "Change PC Settings" link doesn't work. All the apps are apparently still there and function. My Start Screen has just stopped working.

That might deal with pinning but I'm not even seeing the original apps on the ALL APPS screen.

I'm not even sure if I can find the original DVD that came with the system. :( I wonder if there is a partition on my computer that might allow me to refresh it from there? I'll have to look into that.

This whole Windows 8 adventure is turning out to be a nightmare. I think I'm leaving my other computers at Windows 7.

I have made a video and will post a link in about 10 minutes showing what happens.

Thanks for the help. Check back for the link to the video.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
The file I used definitely came from Microsoft. I sent an email using this link (Microsoft Support). My email came as a result of their "contact us" page.

AND my problem started prior to ever downloading anything, and nothing has change for better or worse, and my virus software isn't detecting anything. Not a virus, unless Microsoft sent it because I sent an email through their site.

The thing is, a lot of other people have had this problem too. Microsoft has come out with a hotfix. So it's not likely it's my firewall or AV. But I'll look at it anyway, just to be thorough.

Tried it, from your suggestion, no help. Looks like I'm going to have to make the dreaded call to Microsoft, when I get 10 more hours to kill. :(

The other clue is "Settings". When I click that and then "Change PC Settings" that doesn't work either.

This brings up a good point though. How does one get tiles back, when they dissappear. I tried installing another program just to see if that added any and it didn't.

I'm now going to try restoring to a restore point I had for 2 weeks ago. Nothing has been added since then, except some emails. Fingers crossed again. ;)
