Every time I move files on my portable hard drive, it says it needs administrator permission to continue. I click yes and it works, but it consumes a lot of extra time every time I move files from one folder to another. How can I stop this from asking every time?

Maybe open up File Explorer, or "Computer" so it shows all of the drives - This After you have attached the drive. Select the Drive, Right click on it, select "Properties" and go to Security options. Give the User full permissions to read the edit the drive. Seems like you have Admin only privileges on the drive, are you using a User account that is not an Administrator? Make a new local user account and give it full admin privileges, that should open the drive for you. Was the drive made on Windows 7? Sometimes the files and folders you made or even drives you have formatted under Windows 7 have different privileges than what Windows 8 gives them, I've had this happen for some of my folders where I was storing some junk.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
I am the administrator. There are no other accounts on my computer. I have tried to change security settings on this drive for full access, but whenever I try to change it for "owner" it won't let me.

I use this drive on XP and 7 also.

I changed "Everyone" to have "full control", but it won't let me give CREATOR-OWNER full control. Is this the problem?

Did you try Advanced Security Settings? Acrtoss the top is shows who is the owner. Is this greyed out? You may have to get into Group Policy editor to allow access to that.

Here is what it should look like:

Yes, it looks almost just like your window.

If this is the case and my external hard drive has the same settings as the window you posted, what could I do differently to stop it from asking for permission each time I move files within subfolders of the same drive?

Change the owner to Users:

Open ADVANCED and "Find Now"

You should NOT be blocked out from doing that.

I will have to try this later when I get back on the computer.

Will changing the owner affect me using this device and files on either my XP or 7 computers? I don't want to mess things up with the files not being able to be used normally on those devices also.

Also, why would this change Windows asking for administrator permission to move files. Nothing I've read about seems to explain this situation where I can freely view, move, edit files. It just makes me click on an extra step to move most of these files.

Since I work with lots of files on this hard drive, it affects me more than some other people might be.
