Solved Anyone figured out the disappearing restore points problem

I've had this new machine about 10 days. I did a system restore several days ago, and there were several restore points to choose from. I checked the list the morning of 4/7, and there was only one from 4/6, I manually created a check point, and as recently as this morning, it showed check points for 4/6 and 4/7. I just checked again, and there is now only the check point for 4/7. I don't have dual boot, haven't run any defrags, and haven't even put Ccleaner on here yet. My XP machine would add check points every day or so, but I haven't seen any new ones automatically added yet. Does anyone know what I can do?

Yes. It is set to 1% (7.89GB). That is the way it came out of the box, so I assumed it was sufficient. I've been Googleing around look for a recommendation. Also, I've never seen a restore point labled Automatic Restore Point. One site said there should one everyday, another said every 7 days if not other restore points were created in 7 days.

Correction - I mis-read the configuration screen. The 1% setting gives a me a max of 10GB, and it's using 7.89GB. i don't want to sound dumb, but is that telling me that there is only room for 1 restore point? If they are only automatically created after 7 days, that would explain that too. How big should I make it?

Hello Jeff,

In addition, checking the Show other restore points box (if available) while doing a system restore will let you also see any older restore points (if available) that are not listed.

For now, you might bump up the max usage size some more if able to see if you are able to have more restore points kept saved.

If you like the free program CCleaner lets you quickly view and/or delete your restore points like in OPTION THREE of the tutorial below.

System Protection Restore Points - Delete - Windows 7 Help Forums

Hope this helps, :)

Hi Brink, I edited my last reply about the same time you responded, so I'm not sure if you saw it. Am I right about the 7.8GB of the 10GB max being the probable cause? Does 7.8GB seem normal for 1 check point. I now about the check box, it went away when it went down to 1 restore point. I haven't put Ccleaner on this computer yet. I was a little concerned, because one posting elsewhere said it wipes out the restore points.

You could try bumping the allocated space up temporarily (i.e., 7.89 GB might be limited in your case--but it seems sufficient to me). And, it seems to me that you should see an automatically created restore point at least occasionally even with 7.89 GB. Not sure why you don't.

On my old HP lappy, I have 5.59 GB allocated for restore points. I checked to see my restore points. I found only one automatically created one. I created another called "Test." When I looked again, both retore points were present. However, there still appeared to be room for more. It seems possible that only the most recently created automatic restore point is available provided all manually created restore points have been "dropped out." I haven't created a restore point manually in a long time.

Note that the above mentioned possibility does not seem logical. In this regard, I have noted what seems to me to be "strangeness" when it comes to restore points on Win8 for quite awhile.

Jeff,

Depending on how much free space you have, you might set the "Max usage" slider to about 20 GB for now just to see if you retain more restore points or not.

This will help to determine if something else may be deleting them. Do you have any utility programs installed that you run that may be deleting them unknowingly?

I just bumped it up to 2%, which it says is 18.44GB. This is strange, when I looked at the screen before, it said 7.89% usage (I wrote it down), 1% (10GB) max. When I went back to change it, it said 7.95% usage, and 1% (9.22GB) max.

Still wondering if that much usage is normal for 1 restore point.

Go ahead and install the free program CCleaner to see how many restore points it shows that you have for another point of reference.

Znod - is your HP lappy using Windows 8?
Brink - I installed Ccleaner. It shows the one and only restore point that I see via the Control Panel.

I just looked at the task scheduler, and it shows that SR was run last night. There's no evidence of that in the restore point list, but that may mean that it was run, and would have created a restore point if not had been created in the last 7 days.

I think I'm going to have to wait and see what happens.

I have been having that for quite a while.

Sometimes 7 shadow copies will stick. Sometimes they disappear. Seems to be after booting into 8.

Haven't really bothered trying to find out exactly why 8 is causing that issue.

I just deleted my restore points, and created a new one. The usage is now 19.92 MB. Now I'm wondering if I mis-read the usage when I said it was over 7 GB (though that would explain my missing restore points problem). This is one of those moments that I wish I could go back in time 5 minutes.

I just got back to this after installing a new program and adding a 3rd restore point.
The usage seems to be growing on it's own. It is now 286.59 MB and growing!
I'm on the restore settings configuration window, and every time I click Cancel, and then Configure, the Usage is bigger. It went to 295.88 MB in the time that it took me to type this. What's going on. My fear is that it will reach the maximum for no reason, then start deleting restore points. 297.28 now

Yes, win8. Been out for awhile--actually still out. Missed some of the fun. I'll catch up eventually. I think I'm going to just avoid looking at my system restore info in the future. As I recall, it didn't work when I tried it once under 8 anyway.

I also have the problem that every few days system restore points are deleted, I now need to create one daily just to be safe.

I tried to set up automatic restore points using the Task Scheduler, the log says that they completed OK but they do not appear in the list of restore points.

In my previous Vista PC new restore points were created for each windows update, my Windows 8 does not do this.

Regular restore points were also created by Vista.

Also, there in no "show more restore points" option in the System Restore selection box.

Can anyone help ?

I think some of the related values are funky for sure. Earlier I mentioned creating a new "test" restore point. I'll look again today after restarting. Paraphrased, you raise the issue how much space a typical restore point might take. I don't know. Of course, you'd think it would be at least a partial function of disk-space used in GB.

Somewhat related info: My total disk space is 51.5 GB with 16.1 free (a little more than 30% free). My allocation for restore points, per Win8, is 8% and 5.59 GB. Unfortunately, .08 X 51.5 is only a little more than 4 GB. So, either either the 8% value or the 5.59 GB value is wrong--or 8% refers to something other than total disk space (i.e., I always though it would be based on total disk space). If both 8% and 5.59 GB are correct, then the calculation of 5.59 GB would have to be based on about 70 GB, i.e., .08 X 70 GB = about 5.59 GB. Go figure.

More info: I also run Win8 virtually via Parallels 8 on my MacBook Pro. Here:

1. I have 3 restore points--all automatically created
2. Total disk space--63.3 GB (with 53.9 GB free)
3. Allocated for restore point--3% (1.91 GB)
4. 3% X 63.3 = about 1.91 GB--which looks good to compared to the similar calculation above.

Based on the constant growth of the Current Usage figure in the configure window, I'm certain that I was right the first time, it was over 7 GB, not MB. I was shut down over night, which stopped it for a while, but it's picked up this morning, and is showing 2.89 GB. I posted yesterday that it was around 19 MB after creating my 2nd restore point, and over 200 MB a while later.

As of this morning, I still have the 3 restore points I put in yesterday. I had a Windows update, but no update related restore points. On that topic, I read a post from someone who had contacted M/S, and was told that they only create a pre-update restore point for critical updates.

znod - those calculations definitively don't make sense.

lumbco - After reading many posts about users that have a scheduled task to run the automatic restore points daily, but don't see any results, I came up with a theory. In Windows 7, and I presume Windows 8, an automatic restore point is created only if a restore point has not been created in the past 7 days. The task scheduler can be set to run the program that creates a restore point every hour, but one of the first things it's coded to do, is check to see when the last restore point was created. If it was within 7 days, a new restore point is not created, but the program has done it's job, and ends successfully. The successful execution message you see, doesn't mean a restore point was created, it just means the program ran. That's my theory anyway.

I'd still be interested from any of you, if you see your Current Usage in the configure window growing each time you go into the configure window. Especially if it hasn't already reached the Max Usage setting, or you've started over by deleting your existing restore points (you might as well, if they are disappearing anyway).

I'm going to go back to the store today, and look at the figures a display computer.

I just deleted my restore points, and created a new one. The usage is now 19.92 MB. Now I'm wondering if I mis-read the usage when I said it was over 7 GB (though that would explain my missing restore points problem). This is one of those moments that I wish I could go back in time 5 minutes.

Mine do not grow when going back to the configure window. However, a confusing thing is that when I went from one to two restore points on my HP, the usage only increased by .02 GB = 1.91 GB -1.89 GB.
