Windows shutting down when no user input for an hour

Hi all, firstly let me say hello to everyone, this is my first time here and my first post :)

As to my problem, Windows seems to keep shutting itself down after about 1-2 hours of no user input. By this I mean, regardless of what programs are left running, if I do not move the mouse of press a button on the keyboard once an hour, the system will shut itself down.

This is not a crash, there are no errors, the event log shows nothing unusual, Windows runs through the full and proper shut down procedure as if I had clicked the shut down button myself.

I have checked through every option I can think of, I have looked at every option I can think of in the Power Options menu, including the advanced options, I have searched on Google and on here, and I can come up with nothing.

Any ideas would be very much appreciated. If you need me to upload any logs just ask. If I have posted this in the wrong section, feel free to move it to the right place.

Thanks in advance,

Jamie

I set up a hybrid sleep on thirty minute timer so that at least I can control the shutting down process for now. At least this way anything I have left open will not be lost as it would be when it keeps shutting off on its own.

A fix would be best but it's not too bad a problem if we can't do anything about it.

On a side note, I tried speaking with Microsoft tech but they want $99 to do anything, I'm not paying that for such a small problem :-(

IS this a laptop or PC? With either you can set your power options, it can be accessed through your screensaver.

Or through the Control Panel "Power Options" - Change Advanced Power Options.

Just shut off all sleep modes and hibernation modes, choose "never"

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Done all of that, checked every single advanced power option, even turned hibernation and sleep options off as a choice in the shut down menu. Besides, it's shutting down completely not going into sleep mode of any kind.

Oh and it's a desktop PC.

Next Question: Is it a DELL? Dell Desktop PCs have this infuriating thing that makes them shut down completely if there is something even slightly wrong with the power supply. It this a clean shutdown, or is is simply the computer powering off for no reason? Is the Power button glowing Yellow, kind o flashing on and off slowly?

Check your system logs and see if the last shutdown was a clean shutdown, it will say in the system logs.

I installed Windows 8 on an old Dell Precision 370 Workstation. It ran great at first but it started shutting down (with the flashing yellow power button) if I walked away. Then it started doing this randomly, so I swapped out the power supply and now it stays on all the time.

So power it up, and let it shut down, then boot is back up and check all of the logs in System and Applications.

There is a possibility, if this is some kind of Beta of Windows 8 and it is beyond it's original 120 day trial, there is a time bomb built in to that will MAKE it shut down once every hour. I have a version of Windows XP x64 Trial I got, that has this. I searched around and found a hack that nukes the Time-bomb.

The answers should be in there, in your system logs. If this is not a power supply problem, then there is some damned TIMER doing this. Give me more info - What version of Windows 8, activated? Home Build or Brand Name?

No its not a Dell, its a custom built machine. As for the shut down, Windows acts as if I have pressed the shut down button, it closes all programs and the screen changes over to the shut down screen with the circle timer thing, then shuts off.

Where do I find info in the logs about last shut downs?

Its not a Beta, its an OEM upgrade, original copy. Windows 8 Pro x64 OEM Upgrade

Just a hunch here, but can you post a screenshot of your "details" screen in task manager? My guess is you have a program in the background that's making it shut down.

Razer Synapse sucks, different program for Deathadder? - PC Gaming - Video Games

One guy said Razor Synapse 2.0 was Spyware.

I used to get this same kind of error, when a particular service would fail it would just reboot my computer, but I'd get a little box with a countdown timer on it. Do you get anything like that?

I dunno, you could try an In-Place Install, just reinstall your Windows 8 over the top of what you got, it should re-install any drivers and software that may be causing this. The reason why I asked if this were a dell, is because Dell PC's always go into this Low Power mode that is basically a shut off state. I found out, it is a problem with the power supply, so I replaced the power supply and it stopped doing it,

When you system shuts down is the power light on, say showing a different colour? That may be the signs of this same error.

Thought I replied the other day, guess I didn't. Anyway, I removed that Razer software to try it out and no change when I turn the hibernation timer back off. Still shut down on its own after being left unattended for a while.

As for your other questions, no there are no countdowns or errors of any kind showing before it shuts down. Nothing when I next boot the computer up again, also nothing showing in any logs that I am aware of. Its not a BSOD either as I have it set to not auto restart on them. When it shuts down there are no power lights on or flashing or any other signs of anything. It is a complete shut down.

I guess I'll have to try to reinstall Windows again and see if it helps when I next get a chance.

More strangeness, the thirty minute sleep timer isn't working, the computer stays on till it shuts itself off after about an hour. Double and triple checked all power settings again, all looks fine in there. Will have to try reinstalling and see if it fixes it or not.
