Never been to Heaven......
I bought 8 on the $40 deal, burned it to dvd. I don't use it anymore at all. I have gone to Linux 100% now. My friend wants it to go along with his new surface pro, but doesn't want to dish out another $200. My question is, can I give him my copy legaly to have?

Thanks

If it is an OEM version and you've already installed it, then no you can't.

If it's a full retail upgrade that you purchased and never used, then I don't see why someone else can't use it.

Now I could be wrong there so wait until some others have contributed their thoughts.

The $40 deal was an upgrade, and is the retail version of the software. I don't see any reason you cannot sell it to him. If you've already installed it once, when he installs it he will likely have to call MS to activate, but that shouldn't be any issue.

Great thanks! I will hold tight for others as well. It was the $40 pro upgrade downloaded from MS. I did install it but have since removed it. I just wasn't sure if it was tied to my e-mail that I bought it with or not. Calling MS is not a big deal for activation, It's mostly automated now anyway.

Thanks

Well good luck. The worst that can happen is you have to give the buyer his money back.

I'm guessing he meant that since his Surface Pro has Windows 8 Pro, he wants his laptop or desktop to have the same thing for consistency.

Yes pparks, you are correct. I just chatted with MS customer service. Here is the answer from the "Horses Mouth". It would seem that transfers are just fine:

I played with Mint 14 for a long time and really liked it, but I had some trouble with the UI and getting some things working right. I ended up going with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Unity was a challenge to get used to but I actually grew to really like it. I got my External sound card working and able to record my music, Steam for windows is running via Play on Linux so I didn't lose Skyrim and I am not a power office user so Libre Office was perfect. The one thing I like about it so far is the "lenses" you can add. The other distro I used for years was Fedora, but I couldn't get my WiFi card to work. Linux has it's pros and cons, but for free and with good forums, it is beyond useable.

Did you install it on a dual boot or did you go with VM?

Dual booting. There is only 2gb ram on this machine.

I really like Mint so far - have only been it a few times for short periods.

Surprised how easy it is to operate - and for me, everything works out of the box. I am not a gamer or a heavy office user.

I even managed to make my own custom distro - a very simple one, it is Mint and just includes the updated version of FF and libre office, etc, plus a couple of extra programs like the boot repair tool.

That's great! It is IMO fun to play with and learn. A while ago I was triple booting and made an actual attempt to not boot windows at all, just to see what Linux was lacking. What I found was that I could do everything I needed to do on Linux without much hassle. Even found a great open source "Quickbooks" replacement. After a couple of months I found myself not even needing Windows.

Most distros are to a point where you don't even need to open a terminal. I still use it quite a bit though because it teaches you the command structure of the OS itself. There are quite few cheat sheets you can find floating around the web.

I have yet to try to bulid my own Distro, not quite that comfy with it yet. I have played around here:

Welcome to Linux From Scratch!

and with this here:

Welcome to Linux From Scratch!

But I was just learning and never really took things very serious about it.

I also found a really good image program (can't remember the name right now) that I use once I get updates. Then I reimage and if I mess something up, I can just reapply the image and be back where I started. It takes alot of the pressure off of messing with commands and such.

This is it:

Redo Backup Bare Metal Restore Solution GUI Backup Open Source GPL Recovery

I liked it because it has it's own live CD and I put the image on my external. The UI is really simple and easy to unserstand. So much so my wife uses to backup her W7 lappy.

I have used it to save some data on nonbooting systems as well with the live CD, and it has a data recovery option as well if you delete something you need by accident. Plus it's free :)
