Windows 8 and Windows RT?

I really don't understand what the hell Microsoft is doing here. You make Windows 8, which is made for touch screen computers, and then you go ahead and make Windows RT, which is going to be made for tablets and phones. I understand Windows RT is a much slim down version of Windows 8. From many reviews I've read, it's actually pretty amazing for tablets and phones. Why wasn't Windows RT released first and the Windows 8? It would have saved everyone so many headaches. And if you were going to make Windows RT for phones and tablets, then why was the Start Menu removed? Windows 8 has so many unneeded changes.

Everything in our life has taught us that window menus are located in the bottom left corner. Windows 8, lets change that put it on the left. Oh and lets call them charms now too. Lets also hide the shut down button while were at it. It literally took me 20 minutes trying to figure out how to shut down my freaking computer.

Now the whole idea that Microsoft was pushing hardware specs to manufacturers and were promised they would include touch screen hardware and labtops is almost laughable. Here we are in a bad economy, globally, and you want manufacturers to change their methods of making money in this tablet phenomenon? They wanted manufactures to slap expensive hardware onto labtops and computers now. Not tablets, but computers. This makes absolutely no sense. Windows should have proven Windows RT was the next best thing first by releasing tablets and phones in this kind of market. Only then would manufactures slowly decide to hop over.

How can anyone not see that if you buy a new computer now, it will probably last the common user for over 10 years. People don't need to buy computers if they're old ones are still working. Especially if you're still rocking the 775 socket. Hense why tablets are so hot right now, because nobody has them. And lets be honest, the 1st and 2nd generation tablets and smart phones were and are garbage. Almost as bad as the Intel Atom processor netbooks. It will take time for technology to catch up for the tablets and phones. But when it does, you can expect that there will be a stand still like computers and labtops like there is now. Then someone will have to invent the next new thing. Maybe screens built into glasses or something.

The whole idea of Windows 8 not having a least an update to enable the start menu without 3rd party software is so bizarre to me it's really mind blowing. Microsoft is letting 3rd party companies make money off something they invented, the start menu. How is this even possible to pass up? Any computer idiot can tell you this is a bad idea. Especially when Microsoft is hurting for Apps so much, why not make it an add-on App? What a stupid stupid mistake.

And lastly, what was the last thing Microsoft innovated since they're major breakup? NOTHING! They're famous for stealing other peoples ideas and they're notorious for catching up to everyone elses. They are always late to the game. Microsoft stole their code from Apple. And when Apple almost went under, Microsoft held 90% of the computer users in the world. Microsoft ended up giving money to Apple to help bail them out, A COMPETITOR! Since Microsoft's big breakup, they have declined in users every single year. From Linux to Apple to Google to Mozilla to etc... The list goes on. This company is so doomed it's not even funny.

Windows 8 vs Windows RT: just like Mac OSX vs iOS. Former runs on x86 processors, latter runs on ARM processors.

Both companies have shredded the unwanted stuff from their x86 version when porting to ARM version because of the tighter resource constraints. The only problem WinRT has is the lack of app ecosystem. Otherwise, WinRT seems more suitable for a tablet - not a hybrid - because using legacy apps with the finger is such a horrible experience. Metro apps are nice to the touch.

And I wouldn't accuse "just" Microsoft for copying their competitors because everyone copies from their competitors. Microsoft is too slow to push forward though. With what they have, they should have fixed everything they lack in Windows 8 an their stock Metro apps by now. They should have been able to bring out more and more metro apps to the table leading by example, not paying some developers to develop some apps that lacks quality.

Yeah right - the lack of apps seems to be really hurting the RT. And that is a catch 22. It does not sell because of the lack of apps and the freelance developers don't make any apps for it because it does not sell. That's why MS has to pay some people to develop apps. But at the rate they are going, it is going to be very, very slow. Especially since a large number of those apps will fall thru the cracks because of poor quality.

I would not be amazed if the whole RT project is going to vanish. Besides the fruit company, Android is really going strong in this market and if another couple of tablets like the Nexus 7/10 appear on the scene, the RT is going to be dead.

What I don't understand is why Google, Facebook and the usual app makers who only care about increasing their web traffic don't make apps for Windows 8. About 10% of the apps I have on my iPhone are made by Google. They release apps for iOS but not for Windows. Weird!

Maybe it's because the Windows 8 tablet sales haven't bloomed. You can always use the fully functional web browser to do everything these apps do and more, on a PC environment. This could be why MS is improving Metro in Blue to raise the tablet share.

Blue or 8.1 as it is now called is all about tablets. Who cares about the Billion PC users. Or have you seen any improvements for the PC user in it.

Well, we have only seen the UI changes. Who knows if there are enhancements in the code base. Do you have any propositions as to what MS should do to improve your desktop experience? Right now all I want is more speed.

I have plenty of speed. What I want is that they remove everything that was intended for touchscreens when no touchscreen is on the system. They can easily sense that during the installation and give me a PC compatible UI. And I don't need full screen applications and an apps store either. I have all the PC programs I will ever use.

Wow.... There is a place called a Chillout forum here... ;)

I'm already assuming you have difficulties with Windows 8 and hence why you're posting this?

First off I'll say that Windows RT IS NOT for phones, it is for ARM based tablet such as android tablets. Windows Phone is A TOTALLY DIFFERENT platform that uses WinRT code, which Windows 8 and RT use. RT is just Windows 8 complied for the RISC instruction set. Just another Windows edition for different hardware like Windows xp 64 Bit Edition when it came out. Same OS, different hardware it was used on.

Roughly 19 years isn't a whole life that we've been told the start menu is the lower left corner. If you go to the lower left corner in Windows 8 and click, what do you get? The Start Screen, which acts in a similar fashion to the start menu.

Actually, the OEMs wanted Microsoft to have a touch/tablet OS for them to use as they were bleeding cash from using android as if you have noticed, the ipad is the top selling tablet out there and is under cutting the PC and the OEMs that make them. Hence, why they need a good tablet/touch OS to sell new tablet PCs. Also, you're thinking of the tablet form factor as the apple definition, it is NOT a smartphone based device. Microsoft was working on tablet PCs ever since Bill Gates left as CEO...in the year 2002. Before that, Windows 3.11 had an edition for tablet computing, i.e tablets and touch, in like 1993. He was actually the proponent of the tablet PC and Windows before it was considered "cool." If anything, apple stole this idea from THEM. If you look at apple, they do nothing but take ideas and mush them together and call it innovation. The iphone? A blackberry with an ipod put together in a touchscreen. The ipod? The digital mp3 was already out there by Sony I believe it was. If there is a company that thieves ideas blatantly from others, it's samsung. Just ask Nokia and apple why they're not using samsung as a parts supplier anymore...

Also, when apple almost declared bankruptcy, it was Microsoft who bailed them out in 1997 when they could had just slipped under and had to deal with the Linux uprise that would had ensued I'd bet.

You can't expect technology to just not innovate. You can't. That's why there is thing called early adopters that are the reason why today we have a whole plethora of smartphone choices and UI designs. If everyone thought the way you do, we'd still be using desktop PCs, Windows xp, digital stand alone camera, ipods, DVD/CD players and the such with no smartphones, tablets, laptops in mainstream use, and on and on. People are buying touch PCs and more interested in a touch model than a nontouch one. The US economy at least is somewhat in positive territory. People still needs PCs for school and work and play. An android or ios phablet can't cut it, but a touch laptop or a tablet PC does. That's what people need to understand.

Screenshot (86).png

It also seems pointless to use a third party start menu (when usage data actually says that start menu usage has been going down since Windows 7 users figured out how to pin things to the new Taskbar) when the Start Screen does the same bloody thing...

I am all for innovation. But it must be useful and make my life easier. But a tablet UI is just misplaced on a PC that I run with a keyboard and a mouse (or touchpad). It makes my life miserable. It belongs on a Tablet where I fully accept it.

That I don't agree with. I have a touch mouse that makes Windows 8 the cherry on top. A Windows 8 laptop with a proper touchpad makes using it a WHOLE lot more useful than with 7. The Start Screen isn't a tablet UI really, it's just a cleaner Desktop and widgets.

I understand what you are saying. Most people don't use Metro on the PC anyways. MS probably is trying to push it forward so that they can make everyone download the software through Windows Store which gives them a cut from the app sales. In 8.1 although the enhancements we've seen are all Metro related, addition of more split screen modes mean that they are actually trying to get us desktop users to use the metro environment more. They'll have to do much more than that to get us use Metro though. Offering apps that do less is not going to help.

If you find that a touchpad on a laptop is nothing more than moving a mouse pointer, that's a real simple life you lead. You're really missing out on the enhanced interaction with the software...

I can go minimize ALL my windows on the Desktop quicker than hitting Show Desktop. I can then open what window I want doing the opposite gesture in a neat app picker view. Switch from the Desktop to a music app quicker than you'd think.

A PC without touch gesturing is pretty much as exciting as a box of thumbtacks.
