    Can't access gpedit.msc on Dell Inspiron 15

I can't access gpedit.msc on my Dell Laptop. Searching for it in the Charms Bar Search option gives a Nil return.

Do the Dell Laptops with pre-installed Windows 8 don't have the Local Group Policy Editor? I find it difficult to believe that gpedit.msc is missing in Dells. Can some expert please advise how to get this function back.

gpedit.msc comes with the Pro and up version, at least that was true for XP, Vista and Windows 7.

    Hello Amarnath,

As the others posted above, gpedit.msc is only available in Windows 8 Pro and Windows 8 Enterprise editions.

Was there a specific policy you wanted to set? If so, you can set it in the registry instead. We'll be happy to help with that.

Thank you everyone for clarifying this matter. I can almost kick myself for not remembering this.

    Hi Shawn,

Thanks for your offer. There is a thing that I wanted to do with Local Group Policy Editor.

When I got the Laptop I used to get the lock screen during boot and had to enter a Password to proceed further. This lock screen no longer appears and the computer boots straight to the Windows 8 Start.

The present boot scenario in fact suits me but I was wanting to bring the lock screen back and once that was done revert back to the direct boot to Start. I haven't been able to manage it by fiddling with the administrator's user account. Could you please guide me on how to get back and disable the lock screen during boot?

    Best regards,

    Amarnath

You can get the lock screen back at boot, but you will no longer be able to have Windows 8 automatically sign in to an user account at startup. The auto sign in is what is bypassing the lock screen.

To do this, you could use step 5 in the tutorial below to no longer have Windows auto sign in.

Log On User Account Automatically at Windows 8 Startup

Thank you Shawn. After messaging to you I fiddled some more with "Change PC Settings" (Charms→Settings→Change PC Settings) this time and managed to succeed in doing what I wanted to do.
