Windows 8

Rose the computer I bought on Monday came with Windows 8 installed and after two days of grappling with it and getting nowhere I've reverted to the desktop and downloaded a start menu so I can at least use the computer.!

Hello Rose,

There are several flavors of start menus for windows 8 the one I use is "Classic Start Menu" which gives you the choice of using either the Start Menu from Win 7, Vista, or XP (there are a great deal more offerings in Classic Start Menu). There are skins out there that will allow you to change the look and feel of the desktop also. There is a nice program (ModernMix) put out by Stardock that allows you to use the Modern Apps from the App store in desktop.

So there are a good deal of programs and apps that can be downloaded and used to change the look and feel to whatever you want, Just remember to create a recovery point prior to using any of these programs/apps before applying them. Good Luck, and remember Google can be your friend. . .:D

Rose, sit back and relax. I don't like Windows 8 either - but I get along with it. Take it in small steps and ask questions here when you get stuck. The tablet User Interface that was stuck on top of our familiar system interface is a pain, but if you get one of the OEM start menu programs, you will be better off.

There are many tutorials on the internet and Youtube - even I made a set. But mine were made with the CP pre-version and are a bit old. Here is a guy that made some simple tutorials for beginners. Maybe you can start with those.

Thank you very much for this reassurance that even newbies and senior citizens like myself can ask for help without feeling like ignorant fools.

I have reverted to desktop mode so I can at least find my way around the computer again which I couldn't do when confronted with a screen full of apps and I will, bit by bit learn to use Windows 8 but for everyday tasks I need a bog standard PC.

which I couldn't do when confronted with a screen full of apps and I will, .

don't know about you but thats what i use my computer for ,is to run apps ,be they burning software ,apps to play my music /video /movies ,and app like Firefox and IE10 to surf the net, and there most of them were , right on the new START screen for me to use

,then i just had to go online and download the others that i use that don't come with win8 ,then i learned i could use my mouse wheel button to scroll the new start screen from side to side ,and then use my mouse to move the app tiles where ever i wante to plce them on the start ,

and then that i could right click on them and get option to pin them to desktop,or the desktop taskbar .or deleted/or uninstall the ones i didn't want or need anymore, or unpin or set live app on and off ,the list goes on and on ,

and i learned i could just got START and start typing and it would go to the search box and i typed in HELP WOW.

there are 2 helpful links in my signature for using win8

.i have been using a comupter since 1996 and im still learning new things, take your time and enjoy win8 you will grow to like it i think

i duel boot win7 and win8 just in case i didn't like win8 ,but i rarely use win7 ,believe it or not i missed the new start screen

Ok the problem with windows 8 is there is no color and appearance just like windows 7. Where you can change inactive menu, active menu, selected menu, message menu.

I think Windows 8 is one of the most freshest, newest, and best Windows releases in a very long time. It's been a whoa experience since day quite literally and every since then.

I've learned ALL the ins and outs, EVERY in and out there is to using Windows 8 with a mouse, touchpad, and touchscreen. Best thing ever!

Also, I'm finding where the area I live is highlighting the android demographic, people really don't care to learn a new OS. They just don't. I've been seeing younger people really get into the touch aspect of Windows 8, but most older folk are like, "Meh, Windows 8 is for tablets." Said someone with experience in using Windows 8... Overall though, rather fantastic. Although some of the newer PCs got a tad annoying for a while with the UEFI booting and such. Makes it a tad difficult to reinstall it...

I have the same problem. The fact that you cannot change the colors (e.g. of the tiles) makes it a lot more difficult to quickly find what you are looking for.
