Hello people

HELP. :D

Im having problems with window8.

all tiles in metro have X in bottom right. all i can see that is as i cant do anything else. 3 that dont have X on are Chrome, Live Mail and IE.

mouse does not work
Keyboards does not work

my backup CD does not work.

only things that work are, F12 (hardware diagnostic)
F2 (BIOS)

I have tried all USB slots. 2 different keyboards and Mice. but nothing.

OS is on partition so i cant even try and put windows in to try doing a repair.

2 days ago there was a message saying that there was a error and windows will try to fix.

an hour later another screen popped up saying windows couldn't repair, reboot to continue.
I rebooted and now all i have is the start screen with the tiles on and that is as far as it will go.

any one seen this or know what i can do please.

DELL inspiron 660. something like that. DELL will not help as its 3 months old and they have had the money out of me. Microsoft say that its not their issue as its preinstalled on partition.

£900 foot stool at the moment.

Someone please help. i have been trying for 14 hours so far and none the wiser. apart from never buy a DELL.

thanks people if you can share some light.

All the best

Phil.

Welcome.

Back up your files off computer, and do a refresh if able to do so and if you do not have the ability to recover to factor fresh status using your OEM's instructions.

Refresh Your PC in Win8—Attempts to solve system problems by replacing system files without affecting user data files. Such files still should be backed up. Installed programs will have to be reinstalled except those from the Windows Store. A list of uninstalled programs is provided on desktop. Your personalization settings will be maintained. System settings will be set to defaults. A Windows.old folder will be created at C:. You can delete it once you have everything you want from it--Windows.old Folder - Delete in Windows 8.

You should be able to send it in for repair look at your paper work and look for Rapid Response Depot you get one year. Just tell them you have a defective unit and want it fixed. They send you a shipping box with a pre paid return label.

I dont have touch screen. only mouse and keyboard, neither of these are working.

if i had a bootable disc it may allow me to refresh but the pc comes with a partition that i cant get into as the mouse and keyboard

I phone DELL. the asked me to run an F12 test. it shewed there was no hardware issue so i was told there was no help and it would have to be a paid repair. i tried to tell them that it was up to them as the OS was on the hard drive, not a physical disc. they said 'sorry not our problem'
phoned MS and they basically said that it was Dell's issue as the OS was on the HDD

I have spoke to Dell 3 times over the last 3 months with problems. every time they have tried to fob me off. this time the 90 software warranty they put on the machines has gone over by a few days so their not budging on it.

I will never buy from Dell again, especially after their phone attitude.

i have a problem that in IE i cant use forums as the 'Return' button does not work. Dell told me to use Chrome. I DONT WANT TO USE CHROME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im not the best on PC's but always willing to try, with guildance. pain killers and age i guess:haha:

thanks for the Help Poeples. very much needed.

Kind regards

Phil.

It's always nice to know what is covered by warranty, and thanks for the warning on Dell. I just received a free dell laptop not to long ago with W8. It wasn't what I had ordered I ordered a 2nd gen i3 with W7 they sent me a 3rd gen with W8! Oh well....

I guess the only other alternative would be to pull the HDD and stick it in an enclosure and wipe the drive using another PC. If you ordered the pro version for 14.99 like I did then reinstall it on the primary HDD. But I would first run an image of 7 on that drive then upgrade to pro. I know it sucks but your better off fixing it yourself and get it done right.

Hi all.
I'm on my phone to typing is not great. Sorry

I spent 2 hours on the phone with ms today gosh know what that call cost me he he.

Anyway. They could not fix it either. In the end they took over my spare laptop and burnt me win8 with a key. To a DVD disc. I can not put the iso disc into the dell PC and get to repair state, but it will not repair or refresh. All I can do is format and rebuild. Losing all my work. Photos and docs as well as paid for programs the I dragged from my old PC. I will loss the lot as I have no back up of these. I has walked away for now to see if someone can come up with a way for me to refresh the system so I don't lose it all.

Thank for your help people

Some, in dire straits, have installed ubuntu as I recall. Then, as I recall, used data recovery software to rescue their files. Doubt you can install ubuntu though. Not sure.

I think your best bet is just pull the HDD out and stick it in your other pc, grab your files and photos and wipe the drive. Dell usually uses clip mounts so it's super easy to pull the drive with no tools.

i like your idea of grabbing the files as a slave HDD. with it have to be into another win 8 machine or will a win 7 work out?

Doesn't matter both OS's will see the drive as logical storage.
