Solved Radio streaming while using other applications

My principal problem with my new Windows 8, and which never occurred with XP, Vista or W7, is that if I am streaming a radio programme through Chrome, then wish to work, with Word for example, the radio cuts out until I return to Chrome. How can I make both radio and Word work simultaneously ?

Hi there
Much better idea -- don't use a browser - use this application -- Logictech SQUEEZE SERVER with the SQUEEZEPLAY application -- you can play your own Music as well as Internet Radio etc. BOTH FREE. It will also play music from network disks and you can stream music around the house via Wifi etc . You don't need to have the Logitech hardware - Other computers can recive the streamed media too. Uses very little resource, works on W8 x-86 and X-64 and saves you having to be in a browser when you want to do other things on your computer.

This software can also stream to your mobile phone if you download the mobile phone app too.

Some Software Beta Downloads - Version 7.8

download ist two applications in the list

Note - sometimes when using a browser if the Internet Radio pauses it could be one of two things -- your Internet connection isn't fast enough or the server isn't fast enough -- both causes will cause time outs and re-buffering.

The Squeezeplay software allows you to Buffer a certain time before playing which is quite good if you are experiencing a lot of "time outs" - although the application will then take slightly longer to start. Set it say to 25 secs as a test.

Currently listening to Classical New England (WGBH) from Boston MA.

Cheers

I have chrome.
I just played a radio station & opened word & the radio kept playing.
You said," until I return to Chrome".
You have to leave the Chrome radio page active.
If you close it, it's gone & the radio station is gone.

Hi there
Try the software I've linked to in previous post -- I think you might like it --It's all FREE and a better way of listening to music than via a browser in any case.

Thank you for the advice. But before trying that application, I still seek a way to go on as before, i.e. keep Chrome operative (in particular radio streaming) while using Office, for example. It was so natural up to now, without any additional software. My link is slowish for video, but never interferes with radio stations.
Just tried anyway to download Squeeze server, but the installation sticks at 97%, in spite of my adjusting settings to allow it. It makes me think again that listening to internet radio was so straightforward with previous OS. Can I not go on as before with W8? I don't need wifi radio in all rooms, though it sounds attractive if you want it. I just need the sound coming out of my desktop loudspeaker while I use a word processor.

I do not close Chrome. I move to my Word screen or desktop, and the sound cuts out until I reclick on it below the desktop, or go back in the top left-hand corner. The radio plays only when Chrome is showing on screen, not while it is in the background. How do you move from Chrome to Word while retaining sound?

IE 10 seems to work fine -- For W8 IE has been hugely improved and is more secure than chrome.

I have opened IE, and indeed it remains active whatever else is on screen. Success! I have pinned the radio station icon at the bottom, so that I can go on using Chrome for other operations, and use IE for radio.
However, without being an awkward customer, I still wonder why all Chrome activity stops whenever it is in the background.

Indeed strange.
Glad you found a workaround.
It puzzles me though.
I can minimize the Chrome radio window or just leave it in the background & the radio still plays, regardless of anything else I'm doing.

Ah ha ! How do you "'minimise" Chrome ? I can reduce size with the hand that appears, but the window springs back to full size once I let go. This might be the solution to this and other difficulties I have with navigating through W8.

@caperjack
This problem arose suddenly with W8. When I am on the Chrome window, the station works perfectly, hour after hour. I'd just like to be able to go and do something else on the screen without losing it.

Hi there
I don't have CHROME at all on my computer. I use OPERA sometimes since it has a built in proxy so you can access blocked sites when you are in the USA or UK (or even some countries now in mainland Europe). Opera is run from a data centre in Iceland -- there is no way on this planet censorship would be tolerated there. The Wikileaks guy will probably be given Honory Citezenship --he's a real folk hero.

I think sometimes we are getting more like China or N. Korea every day -- but at least TPB has a new home in N.Korea !!! that will be interesting seeing Hollywood trying to shut it down from there.

Cheers

Your screenshot (I don't know how to provide one myself) shows one source of my problem, perhaps. My tabs, above the search bar, are on a black background, a bit of which shows to the right. There are no minimise/restore/close handles. Where are they, indeed? They appear on my Word and File explorer windows as usual. If I put the cursor there, I get a hand, with which I can reduce, not minimise, the size of the window, but it springs back to full size when I move away.

Jimbo45
I moved from Firefox to Chrome on a son's advice (that about defines my level of competence - I lost my computer footing a bit when MSDos disappeared!). I am familiar with it now, and would like to go on. I still fail to see why W8 makes it impossible, or difficult, to keep radio streaming while I work elsewhere. There seems, from the generous help offered here, to be no simple solution, unless I have explained myself wrongly. Yesterday I was on my W7 portable, with Chrome working behind my Word screen. I also vastly preferred having my open applications lined up at the bottom, instead of having to fumble around in the top left-hand corner. Final naïve question: who or what is "TPB"? Have a nice Icelandic day.

I have since tinkered around in the top right-hand corner of my Chrome window, found a menu, which offered to "relaunch Chrome in desktop mode". I clicked, and found my old Chrome window. No problem with the radio when I moved to Word. Just to check, I relaunched in "Windows 8 mode", and was back with the incompatibility. So what is the point of this incompatible mode, I wonder? I think I am slowly struggling back to as much of Windows 7 as is left among the flashy structures of W8.
So I solved my own problem. Some of the advice was off the subject, but I appreciate the goodwill. You must be running Chrome in desktop mode yourself. Have you ever tried it in W8 mode, though why would you?

RT apps(the kind from the store) are designed to suspend themselves when they get put in the background. For some weird reason, its probably recognizing Chrome as an RT app. I would look through the properties of the program for anything remotely interesting pertaining to this.

Also.. make sure you are using Chrome for the Desktop and not Chrome for Metro. The Chrome for Metro is the RT app version and per above.. will suspend itself when put in the background.

@Chrisa,
You may not have read my last comment, in which I found out how to do what you suggest. Mind you, the "make sure you are..." would not have led me to check that menu in the top corner.
I do not know what "RT" means....
If anyone else arrives on this thread for the same reason, here is the answer: open the menu in the top right corner, and switch to "desktop mode" for Chrome.

I was ready to suggest what you have already done. :)

I guess the mode is for smart phones not PCs...

I am running Chrome in Desktop mode.
I tried Win 8 mode once & found it to be useless to me.

Glad you've found the answer.

For what it's worth, Internet Explorer 10 has the same problem.

If you use the browser to listen to radio, the non-desktop (Metro/Modern/RT) version of IE10 also stops when you switch away from it. The Desktop version works fine. It's one of the flaws of Metro/Modern/RT apps in general, not just Chrome.
