Solved Weird Issue With Switching Out of My Apps

Sorry for the strange post, but I can't think of a great way to pithily describe what's happening. I'll preface this by saying that I absolutely despise Windows 8 so far and have been trying to figure out a way to get it off my computer. No luck so far. Maybe if I had a touchscreen it would be different, but I don't.

Anyways, the problem.....

By far the most annoying thing happening to me right now (besides having to go on google to look up how to do simple things like restart my computer) is that when I'm browsing the internet the computer will suddenly switch back to the "desktop" (not the desktop app, but the main tile screen). I have no idea why it is doing this, but it is horrifically inconvenient when you're trying to do work in the browser. Sometimes it will happen 3, 4, 5 times in a row and I can't figure out what I'm doing. Is there something I'm doing wrong with the mouse? Am I accidentally clicking something? I have no idea and it's coming to the point where I'm about to try and sell this computer so I can get one with Windows 7.

TL; DR...when I'm online the computer seemingly randomly minimizes my browser and takes me back to the tile screen. Please help.

Hello RTR, and welcome to Eight Forums.

I believe you mean it's taking you to the "Start" screen.

Do you think that you may have pressed the Windows :winkey: by mistake when this happened?

No. Not pushing the windows button. At least not intentionally...I'll keep a sharp eye on that, but I do not believe that I am. Ugh, I hate this new computer. I barely even turn it on because Windows 8 is so horrific. I feel like I just flushed $900 down the toilet. :(

Is it indeed the "Start" screen that you are going to?

In that case since your using the mouse, double check the hot button settings for the mouse to see if one may be set for the Windows key or Start screen.

If the "start screen" is that ridiculous purple screen with all the apps that looks like an overgrown cell phone screen...yes, that's where I'm being taken to. How does one go about checking "hot buttons"? Ugh, this makes me sick...I spent 20+ years learning to work Windows and then they just throw it all in the garbage.

Off topic, is there any way to get Windows 8 off my computer? My techie friend tried to install Windows 7 for me, but said my computer has a UEFI something or other which is not allowing it. I'm getting desperate.

This is not typical Windows 8 behavior. Instead, something is causing this. If this is for your laptop, then see if disabling the "Edge Swipes" feature for the touchpad may help. You may be triggering the "Start" screen by mistake with this feature.

The tutorial below can help show you how to downgrade to Windows 7 if you like.
