How to make the Windows 8 partition as primary?

Hi,

My system was dual booting Windows 8 and Windows 7. I have deleted the Windows 7 option from the msconfig of Windows 8. Now the system boots automatically into Windows 8 with no problems.

However, I am confused if I did it the right way. If I delete/format the Windows 7 partition through Windows 8, will it cause any problems?

Also, I found that Windows 7 partition is marked as primary, while the Windows 8 is logical. I am pasting a screenshot of my disk management configuration :

Windows 8 is in C Drive (You can see that its logical)

Windows 7 was in E Drive

There is also a 2.50 GB Simple Basic FAT32 partition with status as - Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition) - What is this?

Thanks in advance...

PS: I do have EasyBCD 2.2 and MiniTool Partition Wizard Server Edition Installed. The latter is not able to modify C drive and set it as primary.

Welcome to EightForums.

You can only have three primary Partition on a MBR setup.

Thanks for the reply.

How do I make the E drive as logical (it contains Windows 7 files , but I am now booting automatically into Win 8 and won't be using Win 7) and then I suppose I can make C drive (containing Win 8) as primary?

However, I am unable to make E drive a logical drive in MiniTool Partition Wizard.

Also, if I delete/format drive E, will it cause any problems to Win 8 boot?

I would backup your DATA & do a clean install. Than you can make the partitions in right order.

This is a strange setup. You have a 2.5GB Fat32 partition that contains the bootmgr. I wonder how that ever got there.

I would just delete the E partition if you don't want it any more and then use the freespace as you like - maybe combine it with that little 1.29GB partition (delete that one too) which seems to have nothing in it.

PS: regarding your initial question - there is no need to make the C partition as primary as long as you have the bootmgr in that Fat32 partition.

I can not do a clean install. I am using my institute's licence for Win 8 and if I do a clean install again, I won't be able to activate Win 8 again as all the licenses have been finished now.

Even I was wondering how did that 2.5 GiB FAT32 partition came up. Will it cause any problems if I want to install Ubuntu and try to dual boot it and Win 8?

Piece of advice - dont dual boot with Ubuntu. Run Ubuntu in virtual under Windows 8. That is a lot less trouble and works real well. Here is a tutorial I made for the installation and handling Linux Mint (an Ubuntu derivative) in virtual. The Ubuntu installation should work the same. Just download the PDF from my Skydrive: https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=475a0a48ca6d4035&id=475A0A48CA6D4035!1847

BTW: the Mint Mate distro I use is a lot nicer than Ubuntu that I had used for years. The new Ubuntu Unity UI is really yukky.

The 2.5gb Fat32 partition is a old type OEM Boot/Recovery partition.

It must be very old. I never saw that kind of setup and I am 75, LOL.

When the PC was new, that partition was at front, Lenovo with Windows 7 have a Recovery disc maker, boots from BIOS. (One Key Recovery)
