Anyway to download clean install?

Hi there,

Just got a new laptop recently that came with Windows 8 installed. And as with all windows computers, it also came bundled with a whole host of crap third party softwares that I have no interest in (die Norton, die).

Anyway, I've installed most of them, but am finding that my laptop still runs pretty slow - not what I'd expect from a fresh new laptop with 8GB of memory and an AMD A8 quad core processor. When I check the task manager there is generally quite a lot of memory in use from a whole host of processes that are running... somewhere between 1 and 2GB. Although that's only up to 25% of my capacity, it's still rather a lot considering my last laptop only had 2GB of RAM in total, and very rarely seemed to require to use all of it.

So I'm basically blaming the way it has been setup in factory and all the bundled software and unnecessary drivers, etc., and I'd love to do a fresh install of JUST windows 8 and then go and get all the necessary drivers myself.

But obviously I don't have a Windows 8 disk, and obviously the recovery disks I've made will just take my back to a factory install with all the junk.

So seeing as I DO own a Windows 8 Licence, is there no way to download the Windows 8 software without bundled crap, do a completely clean install, and then just activate with my licence? If so where do I download the clean install?

IMO, you can't do it in an EULA-consistent fashion. Others disagree. See Effect of Embedded Product Key on OEM Win8's--New License (particularly pages 3 and 4) and the link in the first post of the thread. Also, see How to clean reinstall OEM Windows 8 (non-Pro)?.

My new HP All in One Desk top came bare bones, with essentially nothing on it. Not even word processing. I've bought lots of computers over many years and I have never see one like this so absent of everything.

It you want to unload unwanted software why not just go into the control panel and/or access the uninstall features and begin knocking the undesirables in the head. It's very quick and very easy and very effective. It works.

I would caution also to stay away from the registry unless you are a real, experienced savvy Guru. That could lead to disaster.

There are several threads here that deal with slow aspects. When he/she/it bogs down the red flags go up all over the place. That's often a sign of one of the bandit intruders messing with things you don't want messed with.

In my case my 3 month old computer started acting sluggish and sick. There were strange, unexplained gremlins. I had my contract Guru clean house and set things right. A good house cleaning. Thereafter, 2 or 3 weeks ago I received a whole massive series of updates every time I booted up or shut down over a couple of days. Now my computer boots at the speed of lightning and browses super fast, possibly faster than day one.

Too there were posts which resulted in finding some features, in Win 8, of apparent auto saving files that accumulated up and up and up to extraordinary volume. Thousands. In those cases some of the Guys here helped the victims to remedy the situation and I am confident that the same help is available to you.

I'll take leave of the explanations as I don't want to step on anyone and in any event my contribution would be proselytizing someone else's work.

I'll leave it at that: It isn't Win 8 causing the problems. They should be remedied quickly as some more serious problems can, and probably will, develop if not attended to.

We always assume you have made your Recovery Disks using the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Media Creator app the first day you had your new PC.

It was common practise previously. Not so easy now. You would need to get hold of clean install media.

Real nuisance.

I don't know if they do it on 8 machines - but Dell used to give the option of a no crapware recovery.
