Hi all,

I am new to windows 8 and am doing pretty good finding things. However I have at this time 3 problems that I was hoping someone could help me with.

Number 1 Outlook is a mess. I did read that Microsoft had problems with it but that now it was fixed. Wrong. I get the e-mail on outlook, but in order to open it I need to refresh each one, one at a time to read it.

Number 2 I have been playing solitaire for several weeks. Now when I click on the tile all it says is solitaire and no cards come up. I have tried everything.

Number 3 Every once in a while it will freeze for a second and then you can move it, that is very recent. I am wondering if I need to get a program to find what is wrong, and if so which one is best. I know they all cost money but if I need to buy one I would like the name of a good one at reasonable cost. Any help you can give me with any of these problems would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi, I just wanted to add that this is a new desktop computer and I have only had it for a month. I can't imagine a lot of things wrong with it. Thanks

Welcome. On problem 3, try sfc /scannow (may need to run multiple times--say 3). Also, if you know when problem 3 began, there is a chance you could system restore out of it. You might want to try this approach before sfc /scannow. Incidentally, did you do a clean upgrade install? If not, then your might want to do a clean reinstall of Win8 to rid yourself of current and future problems.

1. In this regard, a useful starting point, for you, could be doing the first 4 steps here: SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation. After doing these steps your install drive will have only unallocated space--which is good if you want the 350 MB partition. You can skip this step if you want.
2. Next, you could use Clean Install - Windows 8. In this regard, if you did step 1 above, then you will need to do no more to get the unallocated space needed to provide for installation of the at least somewhat desirable 350 MB system reserved partition when reinstalling Windows 8.
3. Note that you are likely to have to use the refresh procedure covered in this tutorial, Clean Install with Windows 8 Upgrade, in order to activate your reinstalled system.

Before doing doing what I suggest above, if you have not done so, then I'd use the Win8 upgrade assistant to identify, in advance, programs that may give you problems. And, possibly as suggested above, you may want to create a restore point both before and after installation a program that may be problematic.

Is this a laptop or desktop? Is this a clean install or an upgrade install? Do you have all the current drivers installed from mobo manufacturer website? Do you have all MS updates installed?

Hi all,

It's a miracle. I don't know where I found it , but when I was looking up sfc scan now to see how it worked. I found something about windows 8 that told me to how to refresh it. I went to tools, then internet options and told me what to click on. Then to restart my computer and low and behold it's like when I first bought it. Everything works. So thanks to znod, he got the ball rolling.

You are very welcome for my small role. Still wondering. Did you do a clean upgrade install in the first place? It now sounds like you probably did.

Hi znod,

I'm sorry to sound so stupid. All I can tell you is that it is a Microsoft thing. Basically it is just deleting the cookies and taking the computer to the start point. Before I posted the second time I tried to find it again and couldn't. All I know for sure is all I did is go to the tools and internet options and clicked on advanced and the computer did the rest. I'm sure there wasn't an upgrade install, because I wouldn't have done that because I wouldn't have done that on a new computer because theres nothing to upgrade. All I did was take it to the starting point like it was when installed and that is how it is working. Wonderful.

Maybe you used your OEM's restore to factory fresh option. See my sig. Whatever, I am glad it worked out. My bad in the first place; didn't realize the computer is new. Didn't read carefully enough.

I think you are right. It said something about Microsoft refresh. I'm sorry in the beginning of my conversation I failed to state that the computer was new. I believe I added that fact after you had already tried to help me. I really appreciate the help you have given me. You were right on it, and I am so glad I found this forum. So thank you very much. Your are very welcome. Yes, when I looked back, I was pretty sure that I didn't see the new computer part originally, but was not positive. Whatever, I am glad all is good.
