Windows 8 - A strange mixture of issues

Ok, Sorry for the confusing title.

So, I upgraded my Windows 7 Ultimate 64 to Windows 8 Pro (64 bit) and I have to say I am very happy with the OS, but sadly I am having issues, which seem to be affecting a number of different packages I have installed on my PC.

I don't know if all issues are related to one root cause or if I have a number of issues that have manifested independently of each other, but here are a list of symptoms that I have experienced:

  • Sleeping Dogs, this plays fine for a short while and then suddenly without warning the game switches from full screen to a window that fills most of the screen and is entirely black, audio playback is still working and using movement controls I can hear the game is still playing but I can't recover the game to full screen so I have to force quit
  • Far Cry 3, this does something very similar to Sleeping Dogs, except the audio gets stuck in a short 2 to 3 second loop and I have to use Windows key + M to minimise all before I can open Task Manager where I can see the game has stopped responding and then end process
  • McAfee All Access Total Protection - I have had this report that there is an error that has forced the protection to stop working and it is restarted, strangely this seems to happen frequently around 22:50 most evenings, not sure if there is a connection
  • Chrome has reported that it has crashed a few times now

Square Enix (for Sleeping Dogs) support said I need to uninstal the BasicRender drivers as these might be clashing with my GPU drivers but I can't seem to find how to do this.

Event Viewer is currently reporting 11 errors in the last 24 hours and 89 in the last 7 days, screenshot below.

Partly I think I should just reformat and install from fresh, but I feel I would learn more if I was to find out more about the tools that Windows has available and actually use them to fix this installation. Is anyone able to point me in the right direction to fix this please.

yeah, I'd restore fresh and then slowly add programs while using restore checkpoints along the way so that you can identify what's causing the problems.

seems to me to be either a driver problem or a cabling problem (an HDCP issue).

Ok, double clicking on each line gives extra details, some of them I know about, they were user generated (I used the wrong .exe to try to install Photoshop elements). Here the details, if this helps at all.

Thanks for reply, I was hoping that I might be able to give fixing it a go before resorting to a fresh install.

What can I do to investigate if it is an HDCP issue?

If you did an actual upgrade install, then I would not try to save the installation. I would do a clean reinstall of Win8.

1. In this regard, a useful starting point, for you, could be doing the first 4 steps here: SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation. After doing these steps your install drive will have only unallocated space--which is good if you want the 350 MB partition.
2. Next, you could use Clean Install - Windows 8. In this regard, if you did step 1 above, then you will need to do no more to get the unallocated space needed to provide for the recommended, at least by me, 350 MB system reserved partition when reinstalling Win8.
3. Note that you are likely to have to use the refresh procedure covered in this tutorial, Clean Install with Windows 8 Upgrade, in order to activate your reinstalled system.

Before doing doing what I suggest above, if you have not done so, then I'd use the Win8 upgrade assistant to identify, in advance, programs that may give you problems. And, possibly as suggested above, you may want to create a restore point both before and after installation a program that may be problematic.

Its a gaming PC , a FULL fresh install is the only way forward. Gaming rigs need to be stable and "upgrades" seldom are. You need to eliminate the OS first with a fresh install or your gonna be trying to solve issue after issue till you have no hair left. All that said id stick with windows 7 , win 8 seems to be designed for teenagers and their tablets. We have it on our laptop and i bloody hate it! Im a motherboard short of all the kit for my new gaming rig and when i order it ill be ordering a copy of windows 7 , at least ATI and NVidia have got stable drivers for that.

@znod: Thanks, I thought it would end up being a fresh install, and now having three voices all saying fresh install I can't find a compelling reason not to do this. But some questions if I may.

Can you explain a little bit more about this 350mb System reserved partition? What is it exactly? What is it for?

Windows usually gives itself 100mb, why would 350mb be better?

@archie123: I have considered going back to Windows 7, but to tell the truth I really like the Windows 8 interface, I really don't like the Windows 7 hierarchical menu system, I find the Metro UI to be far more in tune with my messy mindset.

Your are very welcome.

The main importance of this partition, for me, is that it contains the system repair tools one might want to use in Win8? e.g., the ability to refresh, reset, repair startup, etc. I have found the partition to be useful in this regard. However, I don't meant to overstate it's importance--provided that you have an install DVD or USB or a system repair disc.

I searched a bit. Found (in Clean Install - Windows 8): "The 350 MB System Reserved partition is used for the Boot Manager code, BCD (Boot Configuration Database), System Recovery Options (Windows RE), and start up files for BitLocker (if turned on)."

Also Found (in Advanced "Startup Settings" - Boot to in Windows 8): ".... If Repair your computer isn't listed as an option, then your computer doesn't have the 350MB System Reserved partition normally added during the installation of Windows 8."You are in the right place with Win8. Some are not as positive as you at the outset. Once you get the hang of it, Win8 is especially good if you like its foundation.

HDCP is kind of tedious to diagnose. the first thing is change your cables. and if it's video, change the port you're using (if you have multiple ports available). you might have to try another monitor. If you have an intermediary device like an audio receiver or a surround sound headset, remove those from the equations. once the cables are changed and the monitor has also been ruled out and you have no intermediary devices, and the problems still persist, then you have to play with various driver revisions. if the latest driver has problems, try going back to an older driver. you might have to go back 2 driver revisions.

the point of HDCP is DRM. HDCP is to ensure a protected path from the source to the destination so that you cannot bypass the copy protection along the way for things like recording video or audio. if anything tries to circumvent the pathway or disrupts the pathway (like a bad cable or a bad driver), the whole process fails or works intermittently. in other words, if anything from start to finish is bad in the chain, it messes up the whole chain. all the way from the audio and video chipsets to the ports to the cable to the intermediary devices to the ports to the monitor. if any of those fail, the HDCP chain can fail. you can thank the content providers for adding a lot of hardware and headaches to the process of computing. this can be a failure of software (poor drivers) or a failure of hardware.

@dirtyvu: Thanks for the explanation, I see how it might be an issue with HDCP, I am using a USB surround sound headset, and I have two monitors connected. However I use DVI to connect and I was under the impression that HDCP didn't apply to DVI, only to HDMI connections.

no HDCP is very much an issue with DVI.

you can google about it. much better explanations than I can give. here's a quick one I skimmed (I didn't actually read it yet myself) but I wanted to share it and I can read it later myself and offer my thoughts on the issue:
Welcome Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity

that said, HDCP is not your primary thing to investigate. it's way down on your list of potential problems.

Ok. I finally got round to re-installing Windows 8 as a clean install, the tutorial and information posted on here was awesome, thanks znod, not all of it was new to me but I found it reassuring to follow the steps you posted. Without them I would never have know about the 350mb System partition or using the refresh method for getting the upgrade disk to install as a clean installation.

I am now at that stage where I need to get my OS to store all user created data and other temp files or anything else on my HDD instead of my SSD where ever possible. I found this guide - Move the Users Directory from SSD to HDD in Windows 8 | Prasys' Blog

Would you guys recommend that I follow this? Or is there a better way?

Great; glad I could help. And, you are very welcome. Not sure what the best guide is. If there is one here, then I would use it. I'll search here and get back to you if I find anything. I looked at the guide you linked; it seems well done, but I am not positive about all the ins and outs.

Check this out, and compare the two tutorials: User Profiles - Relocate to another Partition or Disk. I still am looking around.

The link method seems to be the less frightening way to do it. And yes, asking for the 'best' way to do it was not the 'best' way to ask the question. I guess what I really wanted was the least worrying or the method with the smallest opportunity for disaster to strike!

My daughter (7 months) needs my attention so I'll think it over for a bit and hope to find some time to look through the links I found after searching over the next few days. Thanks again.

I'll try and keep that in mind for future issues I seek help with. Also I'm not 100% certain it has fixed all of my gaming issues, I have only tried Far Cry 3, and this still had issues first time around but then I uninstalled it and tried it again and so far it has played well beyond the point where it was crashing before. Also Dead Space has a new issue with mouse lag, but I think I can fix that by installing the Logitech drivers for my mouse instead of using the generic windows drivers.

Expect an update once I have checked those details. I don't get much time to play on my PC at the moment so the update might be a bit slow in coming.

It has taken me a while to get round to doing this, so much to do and so little time!

The annoying thing is, once I made the time to do it, I didn't need anywhere near as much time as I thought I'd need.

The method I chose was to create a User folder on my Storage drive and then create folders named after all of the folders in my user's User folder.

I right clicked on the folders and selected Location, copied the location details and then clicked on move, pasted the location and changed the C: to an E: then once all of the folders had been moved I simply moved my data into the new User folders.
