For Experienced Users Only....

For experienced users who hate Metro...

All you need is Windows Explorer/File Explorer/File Manager.

Combine that with an elevated command line, you needn't ever use Metro OR the desktop.

NOT for novices, but we ran Win 3x that way, back in the day, (only way you could
get 'productive' with it) and despite all the changes since, if you know how, you can
STILL run Win 8 the same way. But you DO need to know your file structure, backwards.

I wouldn't run my NT4 setup any OTHER way. Didn't 'stop' running my OS that way until Win 7.

Been trying it on 8. It still works. You still can.

But 'ware wire'.... Newbies, do NOT try this at home...

Then again, I 'dissed' DOSShell in DOS 6.22, because I thought it was 'pussy'.....

(It wasn't, I use it now on my 6.22 setup).

Got a 'bitie' in a DOS 6x boot sector?

Insert disk 1, type fdisk/mbr.

Instantly, a new, clean boot sector.

Problem solved.

It seems like about 50 years ago since I used Dos 6.22.

Then technology changed and introduced a start menu and Taskbar.

I was using it the other night...

But then, I DO collect OSes.

And if you have them, and CAN use them, why not use them?

We didn't have them in 3.1 or NT 3.51. either, CB.

But we customised. We used third-party stuff.

JUST like the ones no-one wants to use on Win 8. I don't get that, sorry.

We made the OS do what we wanted it to.

It worked for us. Still super-tuning my NT4 setup (NICE OS, grandfather of XP, 32-bit version of Win 95/98).

SIX bloody service-packs, tho....and some aren't that easy to find. Got 'em, but!

We scream about XP needing three, then handsome frog because 7 isn't getting SP2?

I still use on all systems Total Commander Ultima Prime and can't live without it.

As I started with the VC-20, I'm still able to use the CMD and their commands as well.

If I remember rightly, DOSShell was a task switcher, which ran applications full screen , and didn't multi task properly. Much like Metro in fact.

Also if I remember rightly, there was DOS Edit which was also the editor for QBasic.

Sorry that I don't fit your category as I LOVE Win 8 Metro. It's such a Simple Simon piece of cake for me.

I'll have to confess that I take exceptional care and effort in understanding all aspects of the personal computer as well as the evolution of software. And I do mean in DEPTH.

I'm an old timer. In my youth there was no television, no computer. We listened to the radio or read books or went outside and played.

Back in the 198O's I bought a Texas Instrument programmable calculator that cost almost $400. Recently I bought an HP All in One desk top for $499 that is super eclipsing with hordes of features.

Whatever it is that you want to debate or bring forward, I'm certainly all ears with appreciation and great pleasure.
