Hi all.as the title says, whenever i connect my samsung 1TB portable Hard drive on a Dell xps 15inch laptop running windows 8 pro, it completely freezes the whole system. i can move the mouse but i cant click anything or go to task manager using ctrl alt delThese are the things i have tried:tried different cablestried different usb portsRemoved usb driversChecked event logs(the laptop crashes when i launch the event logs)Ran CCleaner cleaning registryAll the above did not work. i even tried to roll back to a previous restore point and that did not work either.I tested the hard drive on my brother in law's laptop and it worked fine. it is a acer laptop running fresh copy of windows 7.Is this a windows 7 error? do i have a virus maybe?(i am going to do a full system scan soon)What other things can i try? Thanks in advance

Did it ever work on your Windows 8 laptop? If not, see if there is a BIOS update available for your laptop. That sometimes fixes odd problems like this. If you can use your brother in laws computer again, run a hard drive test on the external drive. I use the Hitachi drive fitness test, but there are other apps available, some could be made by whatever company makes your external drive. Do a search online for the "Ultimate Boot disk for Windows." You can use this to boot up your system and test different components of your system. All it is is a minimal version of Windows XP and boots from a CD or USB drive. See if you can test the external drive with it. It would also be interesting to see if the system locks up while booted under it. You may also want to vist the webpage of the company that makes the drive. They have a firmware update to help resolve issues with new operating systems.

One more thing..if you scan your laptop for a virus, use a free app called Malwarebytes Antimalware. It wil find things your antivirus application will miss!

Thanks!

yes it did work on my laptop 4-5 days ago.

iwill run a virus scan now then use the tool to check my hdd.

The hdd is only 2-3 weeks old. if the hdd is faulty why does it work perfectly fine on another laptop?

Good point, but I am just trying to cover all bases. Do you have the same problem with other external drives, hard drives or USB thumb drives?

Hi

I just tried it on safe mode and it worked. I was ale to access the hard drive and play around with it perfectly under windows 8 safe mode.

I have a spare 3.5 external hard drive that I will try in normal mode

Do you remember installing anything over the last 4-5 days? Apparently it is some software problem and not a bad drive. Maybe some update caused the problem, but that would not account for why other drives work. Try disabling your antivirus software temporarily before you connect it and see if that makes a difference. My AV app tries to scan any external drive I plug into the system right away. Have you checked Acer's webpage to see if any updated drivers are available for your laptop?

I install photo manager SW, and since then it always automatically scan plugged media for photos. It works okay if only 8Gb SD Card. I can imagine how long it takes for 1Tb.

Cheers

Hi all.

my portable hdd is having some weird issues.

First of all, whenever i connect it to my laptop it will completely freeze my computer.

I could access it fine on other pc's and on my laptops safe mode but never when running under normal mode of windows 8 OS on my actual laptop

i then did a virus check and it found a malware there so i removed it.

Since removing it, i could not access data on it even on safe mode or on other computers.

on "MyComputer" it would display the drive and indicates that data is in it and not empty but when i click on the drive it is blank, no files or folders visible.

i then went into folder explorer properties and unticked the box saying "hide system files and folders" and after that this is what is inside the contents of my hdd.

When i click on the hdd icon i am able to see my data and manipulate it. My question is why is it hidden?

why do i need to navigate twice to access my data ie, E:/ > E:/ hdd icon?

I am going to format my laptop as it cant even read any of my other portable hdd's or access event logs as it crashes the whole system.

i've done two virus scans using two different anti virus apps and laptop and hdd's are clean.

Hi,
Glad that you found the root cause. It is common virus hide original file, so user always click infected files.
Ensure your 1TB HDD clean and also all other writable media clean. That the reason I prefer SD Card when transfer to other.

Cheers.

I have seen viruses that do this, and sometimes even after you remove the virus, the damage has been done. As a last resort, if you have not already formatted your system, you can download and run an antimalware application called Combofix. You will need to disable your antivirus program before running it. I have found that if this app does not remove the virus, nothing will! Also, you should be able to unhide your data on that external drive so that they are visible under your explorers normal settings.
