Windows 8 fails to Shutdown or Restart

New Dell XPS 8500 following installation of programs and an attempt at creating a image using the built-in imaging program now fails to restart or shutdown from the start screen. When I attempted to create an image I got a statement that "there is not enough disk space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location". I had 1.34 TB free on an external drive for an image calculated by Windows as 135.78 GB. After the image attempt the problems started. Today's session with Dell did not solve the problem. Their tech will call to walk me through reinstalling the system to the original state. I hope this is not a common Windows 8 problem. An help would be appreciated.

I had the same problem shortly after installing Win8. I tried for days to find a fix. I finally gave up and did a "Refresh". Have not had the problem since then. Still don't know why it happened.

Several potential problems.

Windows 8 is rather hostile to some other software. It has a pretty well known reputation for failing to perform sometimes due to that. Too there are little gremlin and lots of defects still in Win 8. A big fix is supposed to be coming but I already had some MAJOR updates the past few days and my computer is operation at blinding speed now.

Prior to that I has some episodes with BSOD, stall, continuous loop, failure to shut down. I scrubbed it with some aggressive Spybot Search and Destroy.

Windows 8 has several provisions for making various discs to fix lots of things. Creating those discs should be everyone's priority. They will keep lots of people out of lots of trouble.
