I know that Windows 8 has 4 versions , they are Windows RT , Windows 8 , Windows Pro and Windows Enterprise.
My question is that if Windows 8 can be installed on tablet myself ??
Also, if I create an windows 8 metro application (run on desktop) and upload the app to windows store , can I download from windows store of Windows Phone 7.5/7.8/8 and and run the app ??

Thx

hi, not 100% sure but i think win8 app and win phone apps are different ,as are the Stores where you download them from ,written in different languages ,and not compatible. and the app would have to go through store approval before it makes it to the store download .
computer apps work in both win8 and win8RT
when i try to download a app from phone store it tells me i have no registered device

If you tablet has an Intel or AMD processor, yes you can install Windows 8 on it. If it's an android tablet, no, you won't be able to install Windows RT onto it.

If you compile a Windows 8 app and upload it to the Windows Store, you won't be able to run it on Windows Phone*. The asterisk means that if the app is compile under WinRT guidelines, it will be rather simple to change to code, change UI design some for Windows Phone, and then upload it to the Windows Phone Store.

As of now, Microsoft is exploring ways to make that process faster and easier. Probably after the Blue wave hits Windows, apps will need to be recoded some as one of the rumored features of the Blue update for Windows is a different app style.

Hi Coke Robot,

I have mentioned that Windows 8 has 4 editions, including "Windows RT", "Windows 8", "Windows Pro", "Windows Enterprise".

so in your answer "If you tablet has an Intel or AMD processor, yes you can install Windows 8 on it.", Windows 8 means edition "Windows 8" ??

If I install windows 8 on a (Intel/AMD processor based) tablet , the desktop mode will still be there ?? or ONLY Metrol mode be provided?

Thx

to simplify things, you have either 1) Windows RT or 2) variations of Windows 8.

you cannot purchase Windows RT to install it. either your device comes with Windows RT or it doesn't. Windows RT is only for devices with ARM processors.

for a Windows RT tablet, you cannot install Windows 8. Windows 8 only runs on X86 or X64 processsors (Intel or AMD). X86 or X64 processors can only use Windows 8.

If you install Windows 8 on a tablet, you will still have desktop mode and you will still be able to run most of your desktop applications. You can look up what separates one version of Windows 8 from the next. Any version of Windows 8 will run the same software. The differences are things like networking features.

Yes, the desktop would still be there. The desktop comes in every version of Windows that you mention. And as dirtyvu has said, you cannot even buy RT and install it. It's either on the device, or it isn't. End of story.
