File Explorer keeps crashing

Ok, I've given up trying to get help on this, instead I would like to find out HOW I can go about finding out how it's happening. Every time I try to locate a wav file in a folder, or even just open the folder, I get that dreaded green bar. That tells me right off it's going to crash. I've disabled thumbnails, cleaned the drive, reset Win8, disabled the network, eliminated every program down to Win8, shut down Win search, rebuilt indexes, I even scanned the drive with spotfile. It keeps on crashing. Once the process starts I can't stop it, even if I catch it before the green ribbon gets 1/2 way through. Where ever the CPU level is, even if and when I'm able to back out of the open folder, it stays in that range +/- 5%. Otherwise it goes to 100% utilization. I've even restored Win 8 to new, thinking that I may have adjusted or tweaked a setting that I shouldn't have along the way. But the problem is back.

The machine is fully updated and virus free (Norton is installed) The computer is used heavily in music production.

And yes, my bios is completely up to date, and I prioritized folders for music.

Thanks for your thoughts in advance.
Dan

  1. If it's crashing, can you upload the dump file ?

  2. Can you temporarily uninstall Norton. The anti virus programs incompatibility are known to cause problems. You might have to use a special uninstaller downloaded from symantic website.
  3. This is the answer I gave on another thread. The incompatible Shell Extensions can also cause this behaviour
Please download: ShellExView - Shell Extension Manager For Windows

  • This program does not require installation, just right click and run as Administrator
  • From the menu, click on Options then click on Filter by Extension Type and select Context Menu
  • On the list, you'll see some of the entries with pink background, those are installed by the third party software
  • Hold down CTRL Key and select all of them then click on the red button on top left corner to disable.
  • Click on the Options again and select Restart Explorer
  • Now open a folder to see if it fix your problem. If it does then start to enable one by one and repeat step 5 until the problem occurs again, that's the offending extension.

Bingo!!

Sorry for the long wait for a reply. The problem surfaced again (or rather probably never went away) But anyway...I was motivated to work on this problem. None of the highlighted objects in the shellex had problems in both 32 and 64 bits but I came across a file called MF Wav handler (64 bit) by Microsoft and that was the culprit. I am extremely relieved after working around this problem for so long. Many thanks for pointing me in the right direction Topguncp. You are awesome!!!!
