I have 63 Windows-8 Updates and 224 Updates installed in total and had not one single issue so far on my custom build. My old / my wife's custom build has 57 Windows-8 Updates and 144 Updates installed in total and had no issues so far either. It's most likely Laptop (Samsung) related.

:)

Try the following work-around:

Open Task Manager, go to startup tab, and disable anything to create a clean boot.
Do not use restart, it will try to install updates before clean boot takes effect.
Turn off your PC (Choose Shutdown if there is no "Install Updates and Shutdown" item, or else Unplug the battery)
Then restart it.

It is a known workaround for Windows Update problems since Windows 7 (or Vista).

You are supposed to achieve this: No problems at Windows Update.
