Downloading System Recovery Discs problems

I received my Inspiron 17R 5720 on 15th and set about downloading and burning the System Recovery Discs follow some help from the forum.

The first disc took some 45 mins (including ejecting the disc and asking for it to be re-loaded for verification?) and then finally said there was an error and kept the disc in the tray.

Had to initiate another download cycle to get the disc out. Closed the PC down and as it did an error message flashed on the screen.

On re-booting it went to a Boot Mode and after doing a Diagnostics it displayed error 2000-0332 video card memory error. It has stayed in the Boot Mode since.

As a new unit I have requested a new PC which they are going to do but what I would like to know is this a known problem when trying to burn the System Recovery Discs? Are they linked or unfortunate separate problems?

How long should it take to burn a disc, 4 require in all, and are errors common when trying to do this as I will have to go through this process again when I receive the replacement PC which I am now a bit apprehensive about?

Dell UK simply won't send a set of Recovery Discs for free and wan't to charge for them which I am not happy to pay for, particularly after the problems I have experienced.

At what cost?

I believe that they want £20.

In the US you simply fill in an on-line application and they are provided free.

That's not a popular thing to happen. Seems like you just got a defective video card.
I burnt and verified the win8pro upgrade iso in about 20 minutes at 4x speed and it is slight less than about 3gb.
Usually important stuff, most people want to burn at a reduced speed, to hopefully have no errors.

Thanks for the reply.

At 45 mins for the first there clearly was something not right?

Should have the replacement laptop in a few days so will give it another try? I was using dvd-R's but do not follow about x4 the speed?

Not aware that you have any control on the disc speed? Is there a manual way to set the speed?

Was the 20 min the total time to burn all the discs or just for one as when I loaded the first disc it advised that 4 would be required or it would need a 22GB memory stick? This is for the Std W8, not the pro, on a new laptop not an upgrade.

x4 is the speed I set the burn program to burn the disc.
I use ImgBurn a small dvd/cd burning program but I guess you can't dictate the speed that it writes to windows to make the image. But most burn programs do have speed settings. If you have burning program see if you can set a default burn speed, and slow it down.

The full install.iso for win8pro upgrade program is about 3gb in total size. Each DVD holds like 4.6gb I think max. For windows to make a full system image and write it to another partition takes maybe 12 minutes here and most of that time is actually transferring the copy to disk from the vhd virtual hard drive or fake folder that windows makes the shadow copy into.
But anyhow I'm burning slow and verifying at something like 1 gb every 4 minutes. So at that rate it should take 4.7 x 4min = 1 full dvd less than 20 minutes to actually burn, but a few minutes too for windows to make the initial shadow copy.

I'm rambling,, hope you can follow what I just said.
