Infinite boot loop

Hello,

I've installed windows 8 just now and after I install drivers it gets stuck in an infinite reboot loop.
I'm thinking it has something to do with the chipset. The motherboard is an ASUS P8Z68-V.
I downloaded the correct drivers from the Asus website and I've also updated my BIOS to the latest version.
I had the problem when installing the chipset driver from the asus website. I skipped this one after a reinstall and then installed the rest. Seems like that wasn't the problem.
I read around but couldn't get any decent answers. I tried a memtest86+ and that came back negative. Next i tried to set the SATA settings in BIOS to AHCI/RAID/IDE, that didn't help either.
I'm kinda stuck here on what to do.
Specs:
Intel Core I5 2500K
OCZ Vertex 3 60GB
6 GB Kingston DDR3 PC10600
ASus P8Z68-V
2 other regular SATA hdd's

I've got a bootlog that you can find here.

Thanks in advance.

I just did a refresh of my install, and this time it booted. This is the list of removed apps:

Was it booting into windows before it rebooted? One of the first things i always do to avoid the repeated boot loop is dsable the feature. right click computer and select properties , then advanced system settings under startup and recovery select settings. Uncheck automatically restart. This gives you a chance to at least try and troubleshoot any future issues (providing of course your pc hasnt locked up). Its a good idea while in there to uncheck the "overwrite existing file" option in debugging information too just incase you need too loo back on any old dump files.

Yes,

When I perform a clean install (as I'm doing now, I just updated my SSD to the latest firmware), it boots into Windows. I then install my drivers and reboot to finish the installation. Then the computer goes into an infinite bootloop. Then after two resets I get the menu to troubleshoot the installation. If i select safe mode it works fine and boots into safemode.

So I tried a "refresh" and I got this list from removed apps where you can see that the MEI (management engine interface) is removed, which is AFAIK the chipset driver. So I'm figuring if I don't install that everything should work fine. But I dont want a computer with few drivers not installed. That's just not right.

I'll reinstalling now and I'll get back to you.

if its booting into safemode you can use msconfig to troubleshoot your issue. hold down the windows key and hit R . In the resulting window type msconfig and hit return. in the general tab check the "diagnostic startup" box . Apply OK the reboot. Does this work?

if it boots ok you can manually disable everything and turn it back on oone by one booting each time till you find the culprit

Okay, same issue again.

It works fine after the install but I have the "SM Bus controller" driver that is missing. As it's an unknown device in device manager. Since this is the chipsetdriver I installed it. And that does it. So I'm pretty sure that's the issue at hand here. But this is the latest driver from the Intel website. I disabled the automatically restart setting and that doesn't seem to stop it actually.

I'll try and remove that driver now from device manager and see if boots again.

Could it be my motherboard is broken?

Oh i see. The smbus controller is only part of your chipset drivers , i wonder if it is a hardware issue and not driver related. Can you find and older version of your chipset drivers ? One for windows 7 for example and try that (if it boots fine after removing the driver)

If you are sporadically stuck in a cycle, take solace in that it happens to me too. My "MAIN" computer is a new HP 20 All in One with all of the bells and whistles, factory installed Windows 8.

Windows 8 can be a royal pain in the AXX. It is sophisticated very advanced cutting edge technology, innovative and scientifically a marvel.

On my own I have found 9 potential flaws defects. Now I hear that there is a Microsoft "fix" to remedy 52 problems soon.

I've been at this for a very long time. Win 8 has played many dirty tricks on me but I'm very patient and cope with the challenges. It ALWAYS works out

I've found a solution!

I flashed back to the last version of the bios (the one before the current version) and that has fixed everything. I installed my drivers (the windows 8 ones) and now everything seems to be great!

Stupid Asus :(

Thanks a lot guys!

High fives. Great. Another thinking person with determination and intelligence

What you are apparently confirming, if I understand you correctly, is yet another example of the premise of updating.

Win 8 embarrasses me too daily but I don't hold a grudge.
