I am trying to gather some basic info about usage of Win8/UEFI and Win8/BIOS. So please participate in this noncontroversial survey. Note that you will not have a place to respond if you are not using Win8.

After responding, I’d also be interested in hearing about problems you have had using Windows 8/UEFI that appear to be associated with using UEFI (i.e., they most likely would not have occurred, in your opinion, under BIOS).
Ultimately, I am wondering if you think Windows 8/UEFI is an idea whose time has come.

I have a custom built desktop at work using an Asus P8Z77-V LK mobo. It has UEFI. I generally run Windows 7 on the box, but I do have a hard drive with Windows 8 that I use on the box from time to time.

Thanks much. Not familiar with Mint. What do you mean by "Mint had to disable UEFI for Mint?" In your mind is Win8/UEFI an idea whose time has come? I'll check out the W 530.

Lack of information and not able to install different OS or making it extreme pain to install.

Although my Asus P8P67 Deluxe motherboard has a uEFI capability I have Windows 8 installed on normal BIOS setup. However I have experimented with running Windows 8 using uEFI, but found that boot times were actually slower than with a normal BIOS setup. I am using an SSD for my OS so this might be the reason.

Thanks. I can imagine all of the above. I'm mainly concerned about Win8 Pro reinstall pain--having obliterated an OEM's installation first.

See my system specs. I have the same mobo--Rev 3. No boot time issues for me. Afraid to even try UEFI/win8 given dual-boot complexity, etc. Using Revo x2, etc.

Right now with my current ASUS board, it's rocking the BIOS. I've worked with a few UEFI BIOS systems and I have to say, WOW! It's pretty cool to use the mouse with it, as well as ALL the freaking advanced features on a particular ASUS motherboard.

When I get my rebuild going later this year, I'll be with Windows 8 and UEFI BIOS.

That's the thing, I don't see any advantages in using uEFI on my rig. With BIOS, Windows 8 will reboot between 22 to 25 seconds, whereas when I tried uEFI the boot times ranged between 28 to 34 seconds. And it was the same way with my Windows 7 installation.

Yes, on boot speed. About 20 secs, as I try to measure it, on Caviars. A bit less on Revo x2. Really hard to say much about comparative boot times without knowing exactly how everyone is measuring. And, another notable point is that quite a few with UEFI end up turning fast startup off.

I have also turned fast start up off it has stability problems for me. When I was trying to copy a file from my other box it would blue screen and reload the desktop I would do a reboot and the same thing would happen again. Turning fast start up off cured it.

That's weird. And, you were not running UEFI when your turned it off, right? As I think back, I am not positive that all those that had to turn fast startup off were running UEFI.

To all: it's a Revo x2, not by x3. What was I thinking?

Yes, on boot speed. About 20 secs, as I try to measure it, on Caviars. A bit less on Revo x3.

At that time I was using UEFI.
