The Corsair 300R case was a joy to work with and a bargain at $60 (after rebate). I'm buying my son the same case this weekend and moving his parts into it and installing the Corsair version of the Asetek liquid cooler in it, too!

Great hobby you have! Great computer built! I've had someone help build and re-build my desktop computer over the years. But for some reason the contacts (all kinds of pins, plugs and ports) tended to degrade over a period of time. Perhaps is was due to dust and/or our high-humidity climate. In the end I bought a powerful 15 inch laptop and packed away the custom-built desktop. With the laptop, I need to add external hard drives to compensate for the three internal hard drives utilised in the custom-built desktop. These external drives are wearing out my USB ports on the laptop. So I have contact problems again. That's life I suppose...

I am a strong believer in high quality power supplies and dehumidifiers. I have always used power supplies from a company in Carlsbad, CA called "PCPower and Cooling" since the late '80's and they were acquired by OCZ a few years ago. Now, many high quality power supplies are available and I have used Thermaltake and most recently, Corsair power supplies and have been very satisfied with them. Since my computer "lab" is in the basement, I have a whole-house dehumidifier running, so the air is dry and comfortable. Whenever I buy a Dell PC, the 1st thing I do is replace the stock power supply with an aftermarket one that I trust and I've gotten many years of trouble-free service from my computers, which I attribute to the power supplies and regular cleaning and dust removal and adequate cooling.

I have found that the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility was causing my PC to lock up when I left it open over night. I'm running at 4.5GHz and I will probably install Win8 this weekend. I'll buy another 120GB SSD for the Win8 boot disk so I can leave the Win7 boot SSD as it is and physically disconnect it when doing the clean install of Win8. If all goes well with Win8, I'll use the 2 SSD's in a Raid 0 array.

Thank you! I really enjoy building systems and if I encourage one person to build their own, I'm happy! I set up 4 VM's on my PC the other night using virtualbox and with my i7-3770k, 32GB of RAM and 3TB of disk, it's actually fun to use the VM's! One of the reasons my builds go so smoothly, is that I'm very careful when selecting components and my 1st priority is reliability. This Friday, I'll be picking up another Corsair 400R case for our son and moving his components into it and then use his CoolerMaster case as a test box. He wantes to learn howe to build PC's and I thought this would be a good way for him to start learning. I'll also replace the stock Intel cooler on his i3-3220 with the Corsair H50 liquid cooler and my plan is to upgrade his CPU to the i7-3770k at Christmas. I'll then use the i3-3220 in a test box... Projects keep me going through the winter and my PC building will come to a screeching halt when the warm weather arrives as I'll be doing outdoor projects...

Nice to hear that. All is nicely planned there.
When you have some VM issues you can always go to the VM section here on the forums.

I agree: when the good whether allows it, it's time for some outdoor projects.

Well done and thanks for sharing!

I am planning out my first build and was re-assured when I saw that many of the same components you listed in the initial post were on my projected shopping list. Do you have any recommendations on the best places to purchase products? Also, if you have any advise for first time builders I would be grateful to hear it.

Firstly, I'm sorry for the title sounding like a hot shot scam. So I overclocked my system to 4.5 GHz, disabling only Turbo Boost. I also changed a couple of voltages. Before, I disabled not only Turbo Boost but also power saving features like C3/C6, EIST. At that time, Task manager always...
