Hi guys,

I hope this is the right place to post this. I Just got a new toshiba laptop last night. It came with Windows 8 (64 bit), not sure of any more details than that. I am having several issues that make me suspect something is wrong.

First, I want File Explorer to open to "My computer" instead of "Libraries." I looked online and found an easy solution that involved me entering a command in the Target Field under the file explorer properties. Well, here is the problem: I cannot click into the Target field to change its value. I cannot click there, it will not allow me. Any ideas why?

Second, I do not have a "pin to taskbar" option for my programs or apps. I would like to build my taskbar.....i have seen numerous explanations for this, but do not understand what is wrong.

I am the only person on the computer and set myself up as Administrator. PLEASE HELP.

This is what I did--taskbar toolbar to compensate for no start menu. That could help you, but having no pin-to-task bar option. Hard to figure. I never fiddle with machines that are bad out of the box. I'd return it to brick and mortar or RMA it. I'd try for one more of the same model. Second one doesn't work? Forget that model.

you think its something with the computer? it seems to me like a Windows 8 issue, no?

I can try and return it/exchange it or whatever, but I want to make sure there's no fix/something in the admin settings/etc that I can look at.

Unless I possibly did something to create the problem, then I'd return it. If I thought I might have caused the problem, then I'd try a system restore having made an appropriate restore point out of the box. Doesn't fix? I'd take it back. Out of the box and not my doing, I say it's something wrong with the manufacturing/set up process. Either way I wouldn't want the computer.

Are you sure you're trying to pin a program to taskbar and not a document? You can't pin documents to the taskbar, although you can pin shortcuts to them.

I'm positive, I don't have any documents on my computer. i literally just got it.

what is troubling to me: is that when I right click an app/program whatever there is no option to "PIN TO TASKBAR" so what im asking is................why is that??? I have a hard time believing its toshibas fault...

it seems that, given this issue along with the former issue (related to file explorer) there may be something with my admin privileges?

Good question. If the tutorial works for you, then be sure there are no other significant problems before deciding to keep the computer.

i ll tell you what, i appreciate your help. but im not satisfied with the explanation that its the laptop itself, it has something to do with the design of windows 8 and/or some stupid setting that i (inadvertently) might have touched.

im gonna try that tutorial and call windows to speak to someone regarding the "target box" prompt ...if it doesnt work i will wipe the system and start from fresh. if that doesnt work, im not going with a windows 8 machine....

Did you try the system restore I suggested. You have a new OEM machine. Do you have an install medium, and do you know your product key. See this thread. Maybe you are only saying that you are going to return your machine to factory fresh using your OEM's instructions. See my sig.

I am glad it is working so well. Right clicking and selecting either unpin or uninstall doesn't work?
