Windows 8 price in Australia

That's right. Always expensive for our Aussie chums.

It is £189 in UK.

I blame it all on Ray8, I think he's pissed off Microsoft. How cold does it get in the UK.

I got my pricing prediction wrong. I said it would cost $399 and was $0.99 off. What can I say. Just keep an eye out for my other predictions.

Still plenty around on ebay and similar.

MS has got to be kidding with these prices. Wonder how price to OEM's will change--if at all. Maybe MS won't up OEM prices so PC sales will be better for awhile.

Hi there
I suppose the high price in 'OZ can be blamed on the lack of taxes they get by insisting all cigarette packs are the same and making it almost illegal to smoke even in your own back garden.

Australia's cigarette war over shocking pack rules - Australasia - World - The Independent

While I don't smoke myself - all I know in basic economics is if you tax "Drinkers, Drivers and Smokers" out of existence the lost revenue will have to be re-couped elsewhere.

Anyway they do seem to have got a raw deal on this one -- but logon to some HONG KONG sites where there's still lots of the old "upgrade" packs around.

Cheers

I assume you haven't been paying any attention to the recent inquiry into software costs in Australia.

The US companies (MS, Apple, etc.) basically claimed that it cost millions of dollars, for the local Australian offices, to download a copy of some software or music (a few GB) via the Internet (the ones that bothered to show up).

No help for Australian IT price gouging

Yeah even iTunes is twice as dear in OZ, I don't get ripped off too often I check online prices in the US, then I just go to a retailer and ask them if they want my business, if they say yes I give them a price. If they won't or can't come close I'll go somewhere else.

I don't usually try to get them all the way down, I know they have to make money, just the price that suits me. Never failed me yet. A lot of people don't know how to shop, or are too embarrassed to ask for a decent price.

I got the $15 USD upgrade here in the US for having purchased a new PC after 6-1-2012. I am still trying to decide if I got my money's worth or not. The loss of the start button and menu on the desktop is a major negative in my opinion. Sure I can add a 3rd party software to get it back but that is not the point. Apparently backwards is the new forward.

We call it the Australia Tax, which all international companies slug us for their products. It really hasn't anything to do with additional costs incurred because of location. If you think Microsoft is bad, just check out Adobe pricing. What's ironic is that when Australia exports products to the US, the US prices are often way lower than what we pay here.

Yes, I think there many who are not sure it was even worth the $40 (in your case $15 ).

For many it brings nothing extra they want, and just adds annoyances.

Ray, as ever, they will charge what the market will bear.

Price is a marketing tool ( you know that- but some don't seem to understand it )
